Nothing would prevent them from deleting the text, but that isn't the point. The point is that if somebody starts a thread, then deletes their post after somebody else replies, it ends up looking like that other person started the thread.

-1 there are too many things way more important to do on forums. And if OP erases it, all is gone, opposed to what Rin said above.

+1 to an automatic "(Edited)" Flag seems more logical and usefull. But after other problems in Forum are fixed, as search engine, indexing, open tags leaking, imaging support, so on.

I thought they fixed the leaking tags already.

Alloh, I just tested and it does behave exactly the way I said it behaves. Unless it treats threads where the second post was ALSO by the OP differently than threads where the second post was by somebody else.

Unless you meant that as a counter-suggestion. To which I say: Hell no, -10. Nobody else should have the power to delete my posts (with reluctant exceptions for mods and admins).

The creator of a topic should NOT be able to delete all posts.

And it does look dumb when the topic creator deletes the first post of the thread. As far as editing a post to remove all text, at least that makes the topic creator look dumb rather than the person to reply to a deleted post.

Though I would add that you should be able to delete your own double-posts when you reply to yourself.
