PvP for newbies

Nov 20, 2012 Kabuloso link
One thing I missed when was on trial, was the oportunity to try a PvP match. And it's something that most modern games makes available.

My 1st PvP experience here, was with a mentor, and I really enjoyed it, even being killed all 3 times. But there should be an option for newbies to try PvP with other newbies. Because it's fun, because new players deserve to have a taste of this fun part of VO before they give up on trial.

I don't know how would be possible to restrict it only for newbies. The only idea I had, wich is not that good, is to implement an instanced mission, available to all players on trial with less than 2/2/2/2/2.

This mission should allow only free equipment and free ships. When accept the mission, the player is queued until another player do the same.
And it should work like a duel, no faction loss. When both start the mission, they are placed in a stanced map, and stay there until one kill the other. And set a time limit.

I know this looks too magical, but it's a feature that many other games have.

It's really hard for new players to get their 1st PvP good experience. I got mine from mentoring... but it's too "polite and consensual", and the opponent was way more experienced.
Other players gets their 1st PvP from pirates, wich is not better.

We already have this:

Fly about.
See "Other Ship".
Target "Other Ship"
Press "k" to view the Character Screen
Click the "Duel" button
"Other Ship" does /duel accept "First Ship"
Pew pew
Boom

Not a good option. Because it's not easy for a newbie to find another, using free equipment.
I'm not all that newbie anymore, and didn't know about this "K" shortcut.

For it to be functional, it can't require previous knowledge of all these game funcionalities. We are talking about players on trial.

Even players on trial need to learn how to pvp, which is impossible if they can only fight each other. You can only get better fighting other, better players, not people who are below you.

Its not about improving the newbies PvP ability.
It's about providing newbies a way to have fun.

Of course the newbies who decide to go PvP with other newbies, will do everything wrong. They will make every possible mistake, some mistakes we can't even imagine. And guess what: it's fun!

What is not fun, is having to learn how to PvP, before engaging PvP fights.

I disagree. You can learn a lot by fighting people that are at or slightly below your capabilities.

Another point: Players on trial doesn't need to learn how to PvP.

Players on trial need to discover how to have fun in the game. They need easy ways to participate in most possible fun features the game offers.

Today, most players only discover these good stuff long after subscribing. If they were able to taste all good features on trial, the chances for them to subscribe will increase a lot.

But, as they are newbies, they don't even know where to click in screen. Things must be made extremely easy for them to understand.

True, but those are issues with the tutorial and interface, not issues with gameplay. The main reason newbies think it's hard to find people is that the interface barely provides any situational awareness unless you install plugins. Newbies have to periodically check the sector list by hand, and may not even know how to do that.

So rather than adding some fruity arcade-mode, the devs should solve the actual problem - fix the interface.

I still think the difference between players and NPCs should be discernible on the radar... Other games (GuildWars for example) do this by using different shapes.

Yes, that's very nice ideas, excelent option for real training. +1 for those.

But I still would like to exist a way for newbies to fight newbies, even if they are in oposite corners of the map, w/o even need to launch from station. And limiting the gear, to even the odds.

Then, those newbies will taste a fun PvP, with zero consequences, w/o need to fly around or ask others about how to do it.

@Pizzasgood

I agree that the interface needs a lot of improvements.
But even then, this system I sugest won't get useless. Because newbies won't be able to get their PvP 1st experience as fast as they intend to.
They want this, w/o need to ask for help from other players.

@abortretryfail

Nice sugestion, this about diferenciating players and NPCs w/o need to select them. +1

Relatively speaking there are no consequences to PvP in vendetta. In some MMORPG's you can spend years of your playing time grinding to get the right levels or the right items to compete in the metagame. In VO once you have your account setup you can fight and die repetitively for hours then replenish the credits with 10 minutes of trading.

New players should be re directed to latos H-2 when they leave the training sector : ]

interface improvements = yes
discernible nps radar color

and pvp training = perhaps something

Perhaps a timed battle zone like world of tanks (wot)
2 teams = kill the other team or capture the flag = winner
Separate from the overall universe but would be great for continous pvp

Anyhow I like this suggestion, hope they do something to attract player volume.
Happy brainstorming
