droptanks
would be listed as large port weapons and increase your cargo by x
if you get attacked you fire them and they are droped leaving your cargo in space and allowing you to escape . fun for pirates and traders
do I equip droptanks or swarms or mines

What do you mean? God, you need to work on clarifying better.
Do you mean extendable cargo barges that you can haul, and then drop with a key.

maybe he isn't away you can drop your cargo currently, lol
Use your words, drevent.
When I think of 'droptanks' I think cargo deployable large port items that drop an item that provide in-sector reloads or repairs or something. So lets just assume that he means to suggest that and go with it.

Drevent, you already get the same effect by just dumping your cargo.
He clearly mean exactly what he said: drop tanks. He wants to extend his cargo capacity by mounting extra storage containers on the L-ports, and he wants to be able to easily release the entire unit by firing the gun. That last bit isn't very important since, as has been noted above, cargo can already be dumped pretty easily.
Like how fighter jets can equip extra fuel tanks to extend their flight time, and can drop them before entering combat to improve maneuverability. Except he wants to use them for cargo rather than fuel.

Everybody that posted before Rin missed the extended cargo part of the suggestion.
Could be interesting... +1, maybe.
However, dropping the drop tank could be important if the tank itself had mass that was loss when dropped for extra speed.
Also, how would you determine what was in the tanks vs your cargo?

interesting idea
There was a similar discussion with dev commentary here:

I think I prefer the idea of using the L-port over the turret port as suggested in the thread above (at least from a game-play perspective). Realistically though, using the turret port makes more sense since large ports tend to be mounted in front where attaching a cargo pod wouldn't make sense. If the droptank were to be implemented such that it could actually be seen physically mounted to a player's ship, it would look much better on a turret port than an L-port.
How would a dropped droptank be retreived? Would you just need an empty L-port, or would you need a ship with a large enough hold to carry the pod inside your hold until you return to a station to re-equip?

If you want to pick up the droptank you need an empty L port and you cant see whats in it unless you have a cargo scanner
I'd like a droptank in my Revenant. Hope they make a newbie version, too.
A few questions...
1. Would these droptanks disapear after 15 minutes, like regular drops?
2. How would they look like in space, when droped?
3. Anyone can take anyone else droptank?
4. Would the droped droptank have an indicator of it's former owner?
5. Drones will destroy or steal the droped droptanks?

bump ...I want droptanks
we don't care

some newbs asked why ships have stupidly small cargo ....so bump
Because the newbs have stupidly small brains. Ship cargo capacity is appropriate for the necessity and simplicity of retrieving cargo in this game.
Because it's boring to make several travels in order to collect everything the NPCs drops.
I like it, though I'd make it drop whatever cargo is in the tank and not reduce the mass of the equipped item. Call it a pylon mounted exterior cargo hold if you will.

So level up and get a bigger ship. Duh.
I'm not saying this is a bad suggestion. I'm just saying that the newbs in question are being whiny and that said whines are not valid arguments.
