Storage Containers

I propose the ability to sort cargo at a station into containers and give them custom labels. This would be reflected on the inventory, commerce and load/unload screens by a row of tabs used to filter cargo by container, and when under the 'all' tab, indented sublists of the cargo in each container, ordered by container first, then alphabetically by contents. When clicking a tab to filter cargo, it would display only the cargo in the given container.

for example:

[{All}] [ equipment ] [ crafting ] [ ore ] [ drugs and porn ]
equipment
- hive positron blaster x2
- ineubis raven ion blaster x20
- jackhammer rocket launcher x10
- law enforcement neutron blaster x80
- proximity mine launcher x4
- shared group radar extender x500
- ultra charge power cell x10
crafting
- samoflange x120
- synthetic silksteel x8
ore
- heliocene ore x500
- xithricite ore x10,000
drugs and porn
- corvus holo disks x140
- sedina chocolates x320

Yeah, some kind of way to organize our stuff would be useful. It might be nice if individual containers could be configured to allow or disallow automatic withdrawls for equipping ships. Forbidding auto-withdrawls would allow you to have a storage container that contains weapons you intend to sell, without worrying about accidentally using them when you rebuy your ship. And if it's optional you could still have a separate container where you put the stuff you do want it to reuse, without cluttering up the display with a wide assortment of weapons.

Give me organizable cargo space, or give me death!

+1

The current inventory (the station Load/Unload screen in particular¹) is pretty messy. My suggestion would have been to simply align item names in a column separate from their amount numbers, but this is infinitely better.

Please do this. Or something even better, I wouldn't really mind.

¹I do however like the PDA's Inventory screen, even though there should be an option to make "Sort by Item type instead of location" the default method

Yes, big +1

+1, but only if you have to rent them from stations like the extra storage space.

Being a packrat hoarder shouldn't be free. :)

+1 to ARF's requirement. Cost of doing business...

-1 to ARF (sort of)

I was not interpreting this thread as actual containers, just interface tweaks for the sake of organization. If I rented a storage room from you and you told me that I'd have to pay additional fees if I wanted to stack personal goods on the left and goods for resale on the right, I'd laugh in your face.

If you want to treat it as actual physical containers, they ought to be treated all the way as physical containers like in that other thread - finite capacity storage containers that can be loaded into your ship for easy transport of assorted of goods (e.g. kits, grab-bags, etc.). But of course, it wouldn't make sense to rent those. They'd be purchasable objects.

Personally I'd prefer to have both - purely abstract (and free) interface-based organization (folders/tabs of unlimited capacity (other than the overall rental space limitations)) as well as actual physical storage containers that you could buy and use for easy transporting and grouping up individual sets of items.

So for example, I might have a tab containing crafting stockpiles - just piles of raw materials. I'd have a separate tab where I put storage containers loaded with superlight kits. When somebody buys a kit, I'd just load one of those containers into my moth, haul it over, and jet it.

If it's just an interface tweak, it could be done with a plugin then?

ARF, yes, but then we don't want to keep the goodies from people who don't use plugins.
Hell, I'm still trying to get the devs to integrate targetless.
We need integrated features, not everything should be plugin work.

I don't use targetless, and I'm kinda glad it's not integrated. I'd rather have a more useful radar.
Oct 16, 2012 tarenty link
So integrate it and make it optional. Just... please... no 3D radars.
Oct 16, 2012 Pizzasgood link
let's rephrase that tarenty: no mandatory 3D radars that replace the 2d ones.

I would actually like a 3D radar that sat in the bottom center, IN ADDITION to the existing 2D ones on the sides. That would definitely require some checkboxes in the settings to let people pick and choose which to enable though, because I'm sure a lot of people would find having three radars too cluttered, especially on small screens.

Anyway, to address ARF's comment: It would be doable by plugin, but cross-device synchronization would be a hassle - something like this would be much more sensitive than, say, targetless's roid database.
