Temp KOS
sucks.
This probably belongs in General, but it doesn't really fit with the type of conversation that goes on there. Nor is it a suggestion and not quite a bug.
So, I'll put it here in Suggestions and let the moderators sort it out. :p
OK. Here is why Temp KOS as it has been recently improved sucks. My character is a nationalist. Sits up in Geira with only one mission in life, which is to shoot anything that looks blue. Especially if it is Blue. So today, an Itani player was having a spot of fun in Geira O4 which by my reckoning is wholly unacceptable. So, here I was scratching up his fresh paint job when of all things, I get temp KOS with Serco. Me! I know. Hard to believe but it did happen. Twice. So anyways, this puts me in a bit of a predicament.
I can't dock at any Serco station and I'm all the way up at the nose end of Serco space. And sadly, the Itani aren't any friendlier in my hour of need. So, I'm left with the choice of jumping to an empty sector and waiting out the 15 minute (or whatever) penalty period, dying in Serco space, or dying in Deneb as I did the second time and ending up in Odia rather than my home station of O4. I'm not sure what /explode would have given me, but I suspect being done in Serco space would have invoked the death forgiveness.
None of these solutions appeal to me. I'm not suggesting that the recent changes be tossed out, but I do think it might be a good idea to take another look at the consequences. I think that the changes go well with the UIT situation, but the Serco / Itani implications may need a bit of work.

You broke the law. War or not, the police don't generally like shootouts in populated areas.
Fair enough. This argument was used before on the subject. I would suggest it could be argued however, that O4 is a military station on the edge of a conflicted border and being a member of said military it is my duty to defend said station from any and all attacks.
However, I won't because I'm here less to argue that point than to illustrate that the current setup is a real disincentive to what should be a lot of fun.

The popping up in Odia thing is a bug. Any death is supposed to clear the Temp KoS, as far as I'm aware. I thought the devs had fixed that, but I guess not.
But no worries, there's a 'sploit for that! And the planned fix is just as retarded!
I don't think you can get a Temp KoS with a faction you are already KoS with though... might be worth testing. But if you can, or if you are at least Disliked with the Itani, you can just use the NFZs in Deneb to keep the Serco off your back.

Hmm. Yes.
- We should improve Serco/Itani border mechanics and how that reflects on FF and Temp KoS. It is "breaking the law" in most circumstances. But factions who are clearly at war should probably be handled a little differently in border situations.
- Being killed with Temp KoS should clear the state, and not drop you into Odia. I'll have to talk to someone about that.

it only clears the state if you are in that factions sector.. on the other hand.. noooo don't nerf teleporting!!!
So tonight, I'm flying back to O4 after a mission and decide to fire a few celebratory missiles at the Nemesis on my way to the station. This is well beyond the NFZ (never mind the faction protection), however the missiles strike the Nemesis as I'm preparing to dock, giving me temp KOS and launching the strike force. I self destruct in an empty Serco monitored sector N4 iirc only to find I'm back in Odia upon respawn.
Also, am I supposed to be losing faction standing? I was POS prior to the original post. After my temp kos expired, I was 996, and prior to my current temp KOS, I had gone from 997 to 993- presumably because some idiot npc's got in my way.

OK. Went back to Geira and messed about a bit. When was faction protection removed in nation space? I shot a station guard down to 19% before stopping (to avoid faction loss). I did let the sf kill me this time and I correctly respawned in Geira.
For some reason, if you are in the NFZ and shoot something outside of the NFZ (and it hits with you inside the NFZ) the tempKOS is triggered.
But if you are outside the NFZ and shoot something inside the NFZ, you do not receive tempKOS.
I've noticed this a lot, especially with CTC bots, swarms. Always been an odd thing.

Faction protection only applies in capital systems.

This only happens on NPC targets. A player who is inside the NFZ will still trigger it. I used to do it all the time with missiles since you can make them track you into the NFZ.

Ah! Somehow I completely missed that change in faction protection. It certainly explains a few things.
@Kierky & abortretryfail So then temp KOS is based on the physical position of the active players in relation to damage dealt. Could make for some interesting opportunities both law farming and voy killing. I may have to head down to Grey and try a few avalons at the station of a docking convoy....
