Jumping out of an ion storm grants ion storm immunity

Jun 18, 2012 Phaserlight link
A simple suggestion, brought on by the other ion storm thread. Jumping out of an ion storm grants immunity from hitting a second ion storm. The obvious exception would be if one's destination was inside of an ion storm.

-1: Ion storms are dumb environmental effects. Why would you want them to be otherwise?

My understanding is Ion Storms are random events to mix it up a little and to stop auto bots from functioning properly and I dunno, whats the point in having more than 1 in a row.

1+

ARF: We don't need more items with obscure functionality, we need fixes on the ones that have major functionality.

TheRedSpy: Go critique my idea in the thread for it. It's just an idea that i thought would be cool. Not like it's a huge high-priority thing.

My response here was made independent of my prior suggestion. I don't think Ion Storms should give favor to prior victims of other Ion Storms. It's inconsistent and weird.

"It's inconsistent and weird."

Agreed.

They are related threads, theres a link and everything!

Yeah actually I'm going to revoke my 1+, none of this ion storm stuff actually needs to be changed, why are we even discussing it?.. oh right because ARF made a thread about ion storm detectors, which brings me back to my original point, it doesn't need changing.

-1 to both threads

Wish I could say this was Phaser's worst idea ever, but I can't.

Still pretty horrible, though.

we can plot around, or follow the dumb convoy into how many luck brings. At least they leave in the same spot as we do, so we're ok to leave as it is now.

There is also a plugin for that, marking storm locations...

-1, especially when the storms in question are not linearly connected. I could see it making sense if you fly into a string of adjacent storms, in that they could be all considered one big single storm that you jump out of. But if there are gaps between them, it shouldn't work.

I'd still -1 it though. The potential to catch multiple storms makes routes that pass through a lot of asteroid sectors significantly more troublesome than routes that don't, giving more reason to carefully plot a course and/or scout ahead to see if it's safe at the moment.

We need more, not less, reason to pay attention to the non-station/wormhole sectors in each system. Making it easier to just ignore them and plot direct courses is the wrong idea.

-1, learn to avoid ion storms.

Seriously? Lame suggestion.

I can manually plot around the entire verse without hitting a storm 99% of the time, without some plugin. Maybe I just pay more attention to these things?

vskye, sometimes you don't want to -avoid- the storms...

Princess Leia: "you're not actually jumping into an ion storm?"

Han Solo: "they'd be crazy to follow us, wouldn't they?"

In all honesty I'm not trying to detract from ARF's suggestion, I've had this thought for a while and posted it here out of respect for his thread (rather than risk dragging the other one off topic). Maybe it is a terrible idea, just thought I would throw it out there. Hitting multiple ion storms was always kind of an *ack* moment for me, thought this might make things smoother. I do like Rin's idea about skipping over storms in adjacent sectors, at least.

Also bear in mind the two suggestions are not mutually exclusive; there's no reason they couldn't work together.
