I'm not sure paying for "custom stuff" would be the right angle. As Incarnate said they are already stretched thin (paraphrasing) I don't think paying extra for extra work is something plausible right now. I could be wrong however.
As a side note: I'm against "game stores" that allow you to purchase items that give you an advantage in the game. Items that would be purchased with real money or credits converted into real money that is.
I am however all for ways to invest in the development of the game, whether it be by throwing a few bucks here or there, player created content, etc etc. Unfortunately I'm in the bad economy boat with a lot of other people right now and I suck at lua stuff and the mission editor kind of annoys me.

Nah, Ideally the dev team put on an artist that skins new ships etc.. etc.. and then they market the new designs across the playerbase as unlockables. That kind of content is something to consider later, for now, things like change of blaster colours and other programmable cosmetics that can be done in 10 minutes should be considered as a good way to get some secondary income.
I would prefer not to see customizable blaster colors. Blaster shots should look like what they are.
The only time content should be available for purchase outside the monthly fee is when it does not negatively impact gameplay for anyone. Changeable blaster colors would be very confusing for people who don't have them. Shields as something purchaseable with RL money would be a joke. Minor cosmetic skins on ships would be alright, as would character or guild avatars.
ya no kidding slime half of those items were a joke.
Sidegrade weapons should be purchasable. Sure, technically the advantage you would be giving to players who purchase them is variety, but people using the free ones could still compete.
The other option is to make those side-grade weapons obtainable through normal gameplay, but faster to get with a purchase.
The point I'm trying to make is start implementing this stuff NOW even in its simplest form will be worth the effort you invest into it. Give us changeable factions for a fee for instance.

I assumed it would take some time for the fund to accumulate enuff for a large scale campaign myself....2 years I would guess.
Micro transactions involving anything related to the combat model are not going to go over well with most of VO. Simply buying your way to the best equipment is very discouraging to those that cant....
Paint jobs and other decorations that dont affect the gameplay are do able....
I had suggested the purchase of shared storage which would improve the utitlity for a lot of players and there were a lot of objections. <shrug> Who knew ? lol
There is a VO store for the purchase of actual fan stuff

The problem with equivalent but visually different weapons, TRS, is that they make identifying what people are shooting at you more difficult. If I see small green oblong energy, I shouldn't have to wonder whether that's neutrons or a recolored posi. And before you argue, "Well, only use colors that haven't been used yet", I'd rather those colors be reserved for use by new types of weaponry.
Yes, there already is some overlap and there will only be more in the long run, but that doesn't mean we should make color completely irrelevant.
If you want to have weapons that have some kind of goofy alternate icon, I would have no problem with that. But once you shoot it, it should look exactly the same.
Anyway, my opinion is that vanity crap that you have to pay for just makes games feel chintzy.

There are probably a few things I would pay a bit extra for. As it is, when I'm active, I usually have two accounts running even though I almost exclusively play the one these days.
