Well, with any luck the impending faction update will improve faction loss for offenses.
As far as that goes, it depends on how closely to reality is optimal for gameplay- to which I have no clue. My thought is that losing standing should be easier than gaining it. If I go to the store and get caught trying to steal something that costs $1, I'm going to suffer penalties that last far longer and are far more severe than the rewards I would receive if I were to notice that the cashier gave me an extra $20 as my change and went back inside to return it.
Faction standing as it is, is just a method of gaining a bit of environmental protection within the game. If that's all it's intended for, then all my posts are just me pissing into the wind. However, I would rather high standing say something about the player rather than that they've positioned themselves so that they are generally safe.

Aye - Part of the problem is VO sort of needs a legal system of a sort...with minor infractions as well as major ones.
For example
speed in excess of 60 m/s in an nfz = a 1 point faction loss
Carrying heavy weapons in a capitol sector is a 100 point loss
Carrying Corvus holos in Itani space is a 50 point loss
It is all in how we choose to define what is "good" and what is not.

Heh. That would give more meaning to greyspace at least.
Also - no heavy weapons in capital sectors is just begging for several enemy HACs to attempt an invasion, unless you include a mechanism to lift the restrictions during emergencies. Granted, it will probably be half a decade before even the possibility of anybody having completed a HAC arises....
But if I had one and knew I could bring it into the capital sector and that anybody who tried to bring in a bomber to contest my presence would be penalized, I'd do it in a heartbeat, even if it cost me 20M to replace the thing afterward. (Bonus points if it was a stolen HAC in the first place.)

HAC != heavy weapons....
In any case the legal system is way outside of this thread,,,

Lol, what do you think a Ganborro HAC would be equipped with? :P
