Have new players default to channel 1

Mar 19, 2012 vanatteveldt link
case: I often fly with channel 100 disabled because the conversation is pretty much taken over by a small group of people. However, I would like to be able to help around new players from the perspective of a "mostly new" player.

I think it might be a good idea to have new players default to channel 1. Until they know how to switch channels, they are probably asking help questions anyway :-)

keep the newbs to themselves while in newb sector.
This will prevent newbs from being trolled by annoying vets.

Let think.. Ahhh FAMY the asshole whiners of the verse, they should be regulated to a special channel just for them so no one has to listen to the bitchin, whining of the prepubescent boys or children that should be chained in a basement and forgotten

The OP's suggestion would require some adjustment in mission text as certain missions (like Training V) make references to being logged in to channel 100.

Also, the idea of limiting chat for newbies is hardly new. Defaulting new players to channel 1 would be less drastic a change than the suggestion I linked to. The only problem I see is that vets could just as easily troll channel 1 if they wanted to.

I'd like to hear more of the "why" to the OP's suggestion.

I think they used to default to channel 1. They were defaulted to 100 after it became clear they thought nobody was playing the fucking game (not too far from the truth).

Besides, if someone wants to troll newbs, they'll have channel 1 on anyways.

I actually believe they should be set as channel 1 primary and channel 100 in the background.

My vote goes to make newbies start in channel 1, and listening to channel 11. Keep /100 off. In that last training mission, it should be slightly changed to make newbie enable, then disable channel 100.

My suggestion would be to have them listen on channels 1 and 100 by default (as it it now), but send their posts to channel 1. Channel 100 seems to be reserved for random chatting and pirate boasting, and I often disable it if I am busy with something.

I believe that new players will post questions rather than random musings, and I believe these questions belong on channel 1. I would personally keep channel 1 open and 100 closed, as I am barely past the ranks of newb myself but I would like to help new players get up to speed in VO. It can seem lonely in here (out there?) if you don't wander about in Deneb or grey, and these are not the places a new player usually goes to.

So, to make my suggestion clear:

- I think new players should 'read' all the normal channels (1, 11, 100 ?)
- New players should 'write' to channel 1
- At the end of the training, they should be given the instruction to switch to 100 if they just want to talk.
- If someone likes to help new players without getting all the chatter on 100, they can do so
- If someone likes the chatter on 100 but really hates "stupid newb questions', they can disable ch 1 (but then they lose their right to complain about the influx of new players...)

I think that's a reasonable suggestion, and could help with some new influxes.

I think instead of after training go to channel 100 wait till combat level 2 at least let them get their feet wet so to speak, before they see/hear/read all the bullshit thats on 100 anymore, i never have 100 on just 1 and nation chat nothing else
