Multi-action Turrets

In a turret, only the primary trigger is useful. It might be neat to have some turret weapons that can do multiple actions using the secondary and tertiary triggers. That could help with making turret weapons unique, rather than just turret mounted versions of standard weapons.

For example, weapons could have mode toggles, like pressing the secondary trigger could toggle between burst and auto mode on the gat turret or (in future) flak cannons. The shield turret could have some other types of shields - like maybe a wider one that has closer range. Other turrets, like the neutron turret, could have two or three blasters attached instead of one, bound to each trigger. Or a combination flare/gauss turret. Mining turrets could have integrated scanners or weak blasters (and other mining turrets could forego those in exchange for more mining efficiency).

Mode toggles could help with making multipurpose turrets - imagine a rocket launcher that can fire like a normal flare launcher for attacking fighters, but with a super-burst mode that unloads the entire supply of flares at once, for use against shielded opponents.

I think this would help to make turrets actually useful, instead of a novelty.

(I seem to have a fixation on burst/auto toggles right now, but I'm sure there are other features as well.)

While we're on the subject of specialized turrets, maybe a missile turret that can reload from the hold? You could create a special cargo item for reloading specific missiles. Reloading a turret would be the equivalent of "dropping" that item.

Sorry for the brief steal, but since we're talking about enhancing turrets, perhaps finally allowing the pilot to man his own turrets? I can understand the ship wouldn't be steerable for the duration of being in the turret, but at least a ship could use turrets then even if no gunners are available.

Basically, I'm pretty much for anything which could enhance the use of turrets in VO. They are a really underutilized aspect of the game.

+LOTS to improve turrets:

+1 use own turrets
+1 Multimode turrets
Gauss: BIG fire w/ long delay Vs Burst of 3 small
Missiles: Swarms with long delay or single missile with short delay
Shields: shaped shields
Neuts: Dual Neuts, alternated or combo shooting
Mining Turrets with different selectable specialized beams

But no reloading from cargo bay. Not "logical" for small ships, while capships already have infinite ammo in stocks - it can reload small ships infintely. But if you limit this reload capacity also, then would be better to have specialized ammo storage, that owner must fill to use for both reloading small ships and capships' own turrets

A Secondary mine laying mode for shoot3 might be a good and usefull option... perhaps ulam-tellers or better yet make limited quantities of several different mines availible that could be selected to drop
