I know this has been suggested before, or at least that players could fly bots, but I'm talking about a whole new "Nation" choice.
Maybe this is best aimed at VO 2.0 or beyond, but I've always thought it would be awesome to have a very different player experience by playing a Hive AI. you start out as a Kannik Collector and as you gain levels, your "core" is authorized for bigger and badder bots, weapons, add-ons, etc. Imagine Hive skirmishes if there were a player presence on the bot side. Imagine if ever we get more non-hive bot activity in faction space, that high level hive players could "turn" good bots to fly as escort to the player bot as the LAR bots (only with a few useful commands like attack my target, cease fire, defend me, follow me, etc.). All kinds of fun stuff could be unique to Hive at the expense of the limitations inherent in flying only drone craft.

admit it hun ye only wanna grief newbs in a kannick collector : )
Curses! Foiled again!
This might be a cool idea but I think we should be able to choose a different faction first, i.e. TPG, Axia etc..
this idea is awesome, instead of stations you could spawn from a queen!
even better - you could dock the queen.
From the rear.
I tried it - didn't pull it off with a nation character. Now, with a hive character ...

I really would like to be able to have a Hive Bot Alt... homed in a Levi or Queen, with missions as "Defend our Queen", "Save the Levi", "Get N scrap crates from ships", "mine ore X", "Seek a new home for our queen", "Stalk in Storms", "Defend the collectors from those carboniites"...
Bots don't have to be better at nothing... it is enough to have a DIFFERENT gameplay. Everybody can have more than an alt...

Which is why I said 2.0 or beyond. This concept would require a lot of new content, so I'd expect it would take as much time and community support as player cappies took/are taking (i.e. years & years). It has been on my mind that long already, just wanted to kick it around with the forum trawlers.
Maybe you respawn at the nearest Levi, and if that levi dies, you asplode? (and if all 3 are dead you have to wait!) Yes, docking with queens would be how you repair, re-equip, and deliver mission goods.
What if your core AI could spawn at any of the 3 levis, so you could transfer between hives?
You would be KOS in all nation space, so moving out of Rhamus or Metana would be... challenging.
I could see a mission to escort a new queen into the adjacent systems when needed to expand that hive...
You wouldn't use money or have inventory, you just get authorized to equip certain hive gear from queens and Levi's.
It'd be a little like playing Zerg in Starcraft... only, y'know: bots.

Hmm. Maybe they should focus on this first instead. This will, like you said, evolve the game significantly.

CD, BT, +1 my friends, yarr!!!
I must fail at forum searches. I swear I entered "playable hive" and as many variations as I could think of and got nothing close to this topic. I better go +1 your thread, BT ;)
even if ye had typed the exact thread title ye would have found zilch, search engine does not werk like many many other things in dat game, sweetheart : )
Unfortunately since we're all human behind the keyboard we couldn't drop the human intuition that makes us different from the AI hive. The hive uses numbers in place of it. This would break the hive and make them a super faction.
I have always wished VO had some kind of character that could direct masses of pets (ala necromancer in Diablo II) due to my serious lack of PvP skills. This might be interesting if you combined it with the ability to do basic swarm control (maybe as simple as select or adjust target priority)?
I think Inc wanted to eventually do something like that with the military system.
due to my serious lack of PvP skills
Don't feel bad, Growlor - by joining [VPR] you've found a group of similarly disabled pilots.

since Hive ships are not as good as players' ones, hive players should command a swarm/cloud/wing of bots, from one sidekick collector bot to a whole court of guardians, assaults and collectors when hive player reaches 'Overseer' level.
Nope
