Mining Waypoints

Oct 27, 2011 kenzie link
OK, so basically what I am thinking is this:

Mining Waypoints can be set that will "record" a given route in a sector. When you hit an asteroid you'd like to mine, you set this as a mining waypoint. Do this over and over through a given sector's asteroid belt.

When done, begin an automated mining event based on those waypoints. Some sort of pseudo auto-nav system would "kick in" and do flyby's of the mapped roids, mining each one designated as a waypoint. Sit back and simply watch out for rats.

Existing mining mods, etc would continue unaffected (e.g: MAID would still shut down when temperature N was reached, etc).

In short, think navroutes -- only instead of sectors, replace with asteroids.

Possible Names:

* Roidroute
* Mining Waypoints
* Autominer

Maybe someone will like this too ...

I think VO should be more manual, not more automatic, IMO.

I'm almost certain that some people will like this. That however does not change the fact that it is a horrid idea on many levels. Not long ago... (though maybe before you started VO)... the Devs did away with anything that allowed for automated flying due to certain people creating combat plug ins that took over certain aspects of flight control. Naturally, these plug ins offended some people who felt... (and rightly so)... that the greatest part of VO is the reliance on actual skills.

This idea is a massive step backwards. Even if it wasn't it would be useless given the severely limited cargo space, even on the largest player available ships.

Apart from all this, an "auto pilot/auto mine" function would be one of the quickest ways to die at the hands of anyone who had the inclination to convert your ship from a ship to a debris field.

In short, -1.

However... a navigation beacon, even one that set a route that you flew yourself... (once in sector jumps are implemented)... would be cool.

Every few years, same "new" suggestions.

So, why not a visual beacon that one can attach to roids? It remains blinking for 15min, one active per player...

Non-readable location and no ship controls from Lua makes auto-(nav,mine) impossible, while more interesting. And a lonely beacon is a sure sign that a miner is about to return...

you obviously dont understand mining without involving cargo space.

One of the devs has previously stated that they would like some sort of automated flying in the future, but they want to do it their way to make it fair.

Adding the capability to set semi-persistent radar beacons to use as waypoints or markers would be useful though.

Alloh: Targetless records the last roid you were targeting, so as long as u dont target anything else while you are docking, leaving sector, or any time after that, your roid should still be the target as soon as you get back in range.

@Crusader:
That is not even remotely like a blinking beacon that anyone can see... and it's a plugin, not a game feature ;)
Also, it becomes useless beyond radar reach, while a blinking beacon could be visible from 12km+... for miners and rats...

Yes, because I made no mention of using autojett or a similar plugin, while piloting a Ragnarok equipped with a High-Density, a DeniPhase and three High-Efficiency beams... electing to simply leave the ore floating in space because you're simply trying to rake in the XP as quick as pseudo-cheatingly possible.

OR... same situation as above but, every so often... you stop mining, grab an XC scoop your floating ore and sell it so you quickly amass trade XP as well as mining.

OR, yet again... and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping and mining and dumping all the while, some one with even less life than a miner comes along in an XC, picks up the floating ore, he gets trade XP, you get mining and you split the profits.

... I "obviously dont understand mining without involving cargo space."[sic]... clearly, wow... you sure called that one! NAIL ON THE HEAD! Dead on! It's like you're in possession of incredible psychic powers of mind reading! Or you have been obsessively stalking me for the last six to eight years that I've been playing VO and never once did any of the things I described above. Seriously! Can you imagine how much more immersion, fun, XP and profit I could have squeezed out of mining if once... just once, I had thought of any of the things I just explained? Or perhaps if I understood mining without involving cargo space... when I was mentoring newbs who for some inexplicable reason wanted to learn mining, so I taught them the a fore mentioned (typically referred to as "strip mining) techniques in addition to many others... I might have known all that and more! Though sadly... I "obviously dont understand mining without involving cargo space."[sic]

Oh well... shame I "obviously dont understand mining without involving cargo space."[sic]... despite the fact that it has nothing to do with the invalid nature of this post. The fact that automated flight was intentionally eliminated from the game by overwhelming demand by the player base and the desire of the dev's. All that aside, VO is twitch based. It relies on skill in all of its pursuits. It is an FPMMORPG not an RTSMMO... which is in fact a good thing for us because RTSMMO's are incredibly dull, have no action and nearly always fail. Which would cause the Dev's to lose their income, causing them to become homeless and eventually they would succumb to the rather fatal nature of starvation... all because you and others are too lazy to manually fly your ship from roid to roid and you want to be able to press a magic button, leave your computer forhours on end and have your ship zip about unattended whilst gathering near limitless XP and financial wealth.

How about no.

@ Alloh...

The idea of a beacon of some type while definitely as old as Ecka is still a pretty good idea but, I say leave them 24 to 48 hours or ideally... until destroyed.
