Just a Trader or Miner NO COMBAT XP

Oct 16, 2011 ret369 link
I think if someone wants to be totally peaceful them selves, and be a pure trader or miner they should have some way to get Fast charge cells WITHOUT combat. I dont mean to say that they could not be killed by others just that they dont want any combat/weps xp at all. Right now to get the better power cells you HAVE to have combat xp there should be another way to get them without buying UC from EMS or getting any mentor points.

Somehow I don't think the Fast Charge should be a trade Power Cell.
However this calls for a larger VARIETY of Power Cells.
We've discussed this a few times before.. though nothing really happened.
I'd like to see a new lot of power cells.

ret369, it's a good RP idea. imho, there should be a way to get all useful equipment even with single mining license, but the problem is that convoys, group missions and very important ships open at third combat, so....

I'd like to see a new lot of power cells.

No, ret369, they should not. The fast charge cell is very good for combat, so it should have the combat license requirement. What you need is a cell that is good for trading/mining, but not good for combat. I propose:

Trade Cell MkI
Cap: 50
Recharge: 48
Grid: 8
-/-/-/1/-

Trade Cell MkII
Cap: 100
Recharge: 49
Grid: 8
-/-/-/3/-

Trade Cell MkIII
Cap: 200
Recharge: 50
Grid: 16
-/-/-/6/-

Note that though the lower models have high recharge rates for the required licenses, they also have very low capacities. It would take 25 seconds of turbo to deplete the MkI using a ship with a drain of 50, and 100 second for the MkII. The low capacities also impair the burst damage if used with weapons, so I think they're balanced. Mining beams have a grid of 4, so the MkI and MkII would allow up to two mining beams to be equipped. The MkIII allows four (or two high efficiency beams), and is basically a nerfed fast charge (50 less cap and 4 less grid). I don't think a miner would need any more grid than that, unless he were trying to use high grid weapons or use an assault ship or bomber for mining - and in both of those cases he'd need combat xp anyway.

I like that idea, sounds fair to me, that way peeps have a choice, combat, trader, miner. now if only the devs would do it

Getting combat lvl 4 is a piece of cake. I don't really think it's unreasonable to ask miners and traders to be able to shoot some bots and get that.

More diverse powercell options would be nice though, as it stands the only useful ones we have are all pretty similar.

+1 to a peacefull path. Allows one to progress without ever shooting!

But that requires a lot of changes in game engine. I have already asked that before, like ships without guns, what requires the Utility ports or much more specialized ships, and cells.

Why miners, traders and haulers/porters must kill bots? It is like asking Truck Drivers and Freighter Ship Captains to be proficient in target shooting and owning a gun... Maybe in Texas is like that, but I really doubt that anywhere requires me to learn to shoot to achieve a driver's license...

A truck driver doesn't need to know how to shoot. A lumberjack in bear country would be advised to carry a gun though.

Remember, VO is not some nice peaceful neutered country on Earth like England. It isn't even Texas or Montana or da hood. It is a frontier where every single government and corporation gives away guns for free. There is a war that has been going on for hundreds of years. There are roving bands of pirates and nationalists and terrorists. There are rogue bots everywhere, even within the capital systems. It is a dangerous place.

So I don't think the current system is unreasonable. It would be nice if there were more options.

Miners need combat experience - ever done a hostile extraction?
Oct 27, 2011 ret369 link
Not all miners want to do a hostile extraction just as not all miners want to join ore and not all traders want to join TGFT ( mixed combat/trader/miner/wannabe rat)
