hyperspace?

Sep 20, 2003 Demonen link
I think the jumps should go through an actual hyperspace sector marked with the secor you came from and the sector you come to.
Weapons should work but be unpredictable, like in Bab5.
Boosting should also work.
Radars should be a joke (range limited to 200m or something.)

The distance between the two sectors should be relative to their distance in the game universe.

This will open up a whole new world in wich to put hidden sector entrances.

I know this is not very realistic in terms of sector daemon load, but I've allways wanted to enter hyperspace and sneak around in there.

What is that I hear? Realistic placement of blackmarket stations?

mmmmm.... You gotta make it time-limited. As in, if you stay in hyperspace too long, your warp field will collapse from the strain of holding a slowly moving ship in hyperspace, and you will go BOOM!

OMFG It'd have to be real trippy like the now dead sector 0, but trippier!

I offer a counter solution:

Tweak the current boost so that you do not lose speed when you stop boosting (like rockets, and unlike homers). You can continue boosting upwards to incredible speeds, but with a catch: Certain hulls can only go so fast before they start breaking apart (taking damage).

For instance, a ship like the Centurion with its small size and rigid hull might have a max sustainable speed of 300, but a ship like the Hornet, with a larger hull and broader profile might only be able to sustain 220 before it starts taking damage.

Ooo! That'd be awesome! If you were really desparate to get away, you could push your ship beyond its limits and pray! And there could be structural support fields and stuff that you could buy to increase the speed!

/me imagines a sky box that always looks like it's real close...
what about a current... your velocity would be 200m/s from entrance to exit + your normal velocity and once you got past a certain point you would automatically be sent to the next sector. Ex some one going from s1 to s4 might see someone going from s4 to s1 but if neither were moving they'd be going 400m/s in relation to each other.
Secrets could be in little eddies where there was no current, or a different current.
Radar and visibility really low... once something came into you're visibility range there would be a small graphic to match the sky box... so it looked like they were parting it as they came through.

I agree with rogue, time should have something to do with it. On the same note, there should be a way to combat the time issue. Like not boosting, or something, should increase ur time to silently 'float' through there. Hidden sectors and stations are also of great potential here.

ooOOoo, it would help my idea of faster trade routes, navigating 'hyperspace' takes more and more experience. If somehow the space relation could be messed up to make 'shorter than real' ways possible. (there are marked 'ways' to sectors, but they take longer than venturing into the unknown)

How's this..

Your ship has very small repair units inside it.
Travelling under normal speed in hyperspace allows them time to repair the minor amounts of damage that occurs when you enter hyperspace. the faster you go, the more your ship gets ripped apart at it's seams. Some ships, because of their design, function well in hyperspace, while others, do not.

you mentions bab5 as the base of your idea.
you can take more ideas from there. one i like was that some ships can jump into hyper space from any spot in the space or that it takes time for bigger ships to jusp into hyper space from the "jump gates" because the poles had to be moved...there is all sort of stuff you can take from there....
cheers :)
p.s: if you did'nt see the tv show, you can get an idea how it was from 3 of the movies there are (mabye more)...:)

The devs have already stated that in the future, the whole process of navigation will be redesigned. I remember one comment that all of the sectors that we now have access to would be a single solar system, and there would be a possibly unlimited number of systems in the universe.

This seems to hint at something similar to the Freelancer navigation system. The whole warp tunnels that could be disrupted does bring about some interesting possibilities for pirates. I don't know how that would affect server load though, because it would make every solar system a single sector with several stations.

Also, how about switching from a bay outfitting system to a mass-based outfit system. Then you could make a smuggling ship with dual engines/batteries or a thousand other mods. You could even buy more of those little repair bots you were talking about. Just got EV on the brain, I think they figured out a good system of providing customization within reason.
