Serco/Itani unique ships

Aug 26, 2011 pirren link
Leave Prom and SVG available only for Serco chars, and Valk+IBG only for Itani. Because atm there's no difference between nations.

Again this topic? Anyway,

+1 including UIT ships (Mauds and WTD)

Indeed, to evolve this idea, make ALL Guards to use only national ships. I.e.:

Serco Guards use only Proms and SVG
Itani Guards use only Valks and IBG
UIT Guards use only WTD and Mauds

Therefore, localized guards' ships should be related to station owner:
TPG: Raptors and Maud.X
Corvus: Grayhound, MercMaud, Vulturius
BioCom: Vulture XT
Valent: Maud.B
Axia: Maud2, Wraith
Tunguska: Centaur Aggressors
Orion: Convoy Guardian Hornet, Centurion Rev C
--other factions does not have own proper ships, should use regular vultures/hogs

One clear advantage for this is DIVERSITY. When you jump from one station to another the present ships change...

Alloh, change that "ALL" to "some". If you mandate that ALL guards use their faction's ships, then you will have Aeolus defending their stations with moths...

Station guards should use the most appropriate ships they have at their disposal, with no concern over whether it is their own unique ship or not. Uniqueness of a ship would only be factored in as a tie-breaker if they weren't sure which ship to use, or possibly a slight preference for the sake of publicity.

The ships they have available should be related to the type of station, as well as faction. A Serco barracks should have Proms and SVGs defending it. A Serco mining station should not. Maybe an SVG or two, and the rest mainline Vultures or Warthogs. Proms are a valuable resource. They are not going to waste them defending some mining station or shopping center. Deneb is more important.

Keep in mind that for guarding a station (which the NFZ implies is fragile), it is not appropriate to employ bombers, heavy assaults, and expensive flimsy and unmaneuverable chase ships. Nor is it appropriate to use clumsy trade ships. A quick and nimble force is what is needed - one that can function like a surgeon to carefully remove a danger without damaging anything important. I could see the guards at military stations using slightly greater force (such as proms) since a military station is presumably more sturdy and the guards better trained. But mining, commercial, and research stations should stick to the light fighters in general, only resorting to less appropriate ships as a last resort, not out of nationalism.

Pizzasgood more or less hit the nail on the head.

I'd say that for ease of implementation that the devs ought to take the current standard strike force/station guard lineup, and substitute in the faction-specific craft where appropriate across the board. After which, the station strike forces can be fine-tuned on a case-by-case basis, so we don't end up with oddities like Sky Command Promethei being launched from every dinky Serco mining station.

Additionally, I might suggest that it would be nice if the strike forces and station guards also used the specialty weaponry of their particular factions, but that is a lesser priority.

I disagree about the mining stations, given that the ore used for ships and weapons comes from these stations... it would not be unreasonable for them to have one or two Proms or Valks on patrol or as members of strike force.

Since when Aeolus is a Nation? AFAIK, they are a gray faction, and can use any ships. Indeed, they should use Serco Variants...
And note that I added --other factions does not have own proper ships, should use regular vultures/hogs

Evolving the ideas is welcome, fine-tuning is required. But from all ships I listed, maybe only the Hound is not fit for guarding stations. And every station is valuable. But note we have lots of variations, like from basic Prom to SCP, from Valk.1 to X-1. And while a capital should have a dozen of "top" fighters and a capship protecting them, small stations should have only one or two Vultures...

That is somewhat true Ryan, but the same logic can be applied to all of their stations. Mining, manufacturing, research, and military are all contributing to the war effort, and commercial may be funding the war effort, depending on how their economy works. So yes, mining stations are important, but all stations are important.

The elite ships would have to be distributed among the most important of the stations. If a particular mining station is the only place they are obtaining Heliocene for example. Or if a manufacturing station is very close to the front lines and therefore both important for quick resupply and at high risk of being attacked.

responses to Alloh:

"Since when Aeolus is a Nation?"

I never said they were. You listed Tunguska and Orion, which are no more nations than Aeolus is.

"And note that I added --other factions does not have own proper ships, should use regular vultures/hogs"

Yes, I saw that. I assumed you meant factions that don't have their own unique ships. I didn't realize you meant "proper" to mean "suitable for guard duty".

Anyway, I do agree with the overall idea here. I just get argumentative sometimes and start nit-picking.

Personally, I've always suspected that Aeolus might be at odds with the Serco Dominion over mining rights in Helios...
