Put a leash on Dr. Lecter..... Case in point, http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/24907?page=2#307742

Unless you appreciate losing customers.

Forums have trolls. Trolls are harmless unless you give them your attention.

Good luck deleting the internet.
May 27, 2011 HuntrCkr link
@pirren: Thank You :-)
PS. If you don't get the Hackers reference, I can only suggest you watch the movie... It IS a really good movie :-)

@Shapenaji: It's not so much the trolling which I mind... Dr. Lecter and I already had a previous run-in, and I didn't care one bit...

Being offensive and disgusting on the other hand shouldn't be allowed though, as the Rules of Conduct state. Either the forums are moderated, and posts like Dr.Lecter's last post as linked to above are dealt with, or you have open forums and let the harassment begin! (Believe me, I am just as capable of dishing it out should that be the policy)

Either you have rules, you enforce them equally, and you have a happy community...
Or you enforce them selectively, have disgruntled customers cancelling subscriptions, and lose business...

Which is it Mr. Moderator?

This makes me remember the various "Ban ________________" suggestions. I expect it will go just as well.

Out of all my vicious posts, that little feather duster of a parting shot is what you pick? Ha.
May 27, 2011 Whistler link
What you have offered is a false choice. The forums are moderated, but the threshold for moderation is higher than you prefer / not to your liking. I disagree that the rules (which are vague) are enforced selectively, though certainly there is some subjectivity in deciding how to apply them. Clear, objective rules are sometimes easier to deal with - but they can also become oppressive when applied with equal force in every situation. Given the tools I have, I try to maintain a certain "flow" by heading off the more serious flame wars. There is a line, and most know where it is. I think it is beneficial to allow the community to police itself a little, which can sometimes make people uncomfortable when they step too far outside of the norm. It's like that in real life, right?

It will run like this until I get different instructions and tools from the developers, they do something else, or it stops working as well as it does now.

HuntrCkr, do you know what "gfy" means? Or should I explain?
May 27, 2011 Whistler link
Do not explain
May 27, 2011 HuntrCkr link
Whistler: OK... so my interpretation of how you interpret the rules then says to me (based of course on other members past posts) that swearing, racism, generally abusive comments and vulgarity are all allowed, as long as it doesn't make the majority of people uncomfortable? I am not trying to be sarcastic or complaining... Just when I read the RoC, it stated pretty clearly to me that it was not allowed, in-game or in the forums. Guess I will have to fit in...

@pirren: You know, therefore that you try so hard to seem intelligent, you can say the dumbest things sometimes... So I will explain it to you... When somebody tell you to GFY, and you smile at them and say "Thank You", it's not only meant sarcastically, but it also confuses the living daylights out of them... Thank you for proving my point, now STFU.

[[Do not explain]]
LOL... I'm not THAT sensitive ;-) I just want to understand the rules of the game before I start playing

Oh, before I forget, I am happy, and the suggestion is concluded in my opinion... Please feel free to lock the thread if you wish to do so
May 27, 2011 ryan reign link
Hunter... you are an idiot and you obviously have not been here long enough to see the many posts/threads that have been locked and or deleted due to "swearing, racism, generally abusive comments and vulgarity".
May 27, 2011 Whistler link
HuntrCkr: That would be your interpretation indeed. I will not participate in arguments featuring selective observation. VO is not a Disney holding, and there is a Teen rating:

"Titles rated T (Teen) have content that may be suitable for ages 13 and older. Titles in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language."

I tend to have less tolerance for actual attacks of a racial or sexual nature, and may be more tolerant of other behavior. This again is subjective and you may disagree with my judgement. Bear in mind that I am an unpaid volunteer with a family and full-time job, so I'm not available to catch everything. If you would like to kibitz about my performance more, please contact the development team. Enhanced guidelines and the tools to enforce them would come from them.
May 27, 2011 HuntrCkr link
Whistler: Not at all unhappy with you, and never meant to suggest that you did something wrong or that I disagree with you... I understand now completely that you are not paid to do this, and that you can't read every thread posted. Also, as an outside volunteer, I understand that you are also restricted in what you can do. If I do have a serious problem with a player, the forums is not the place to bring it up. I should talk to Guild directly...

All I was saying is that what is written in the RoC as available on this website, and what's being enforced, are not the same thing. Please forgive me if this came across as a personal attack on you or your performance as a moderator... it's not. Simply ignorance on my part.

@ryan reign: [[have not been here long enough to see the many posts/threads that have been locked and or deleted due to "swearing, racism, generally abusive comments and vulgarity"]]
You would be quite correct that I have not been around long enough to see this... something I will readily admit. But, and this may surprise you, having a Rules of Conduct for a MMO is not something new to me, considering I have been playing them for give or take 12 years now... I am use to them being enforced quite viciously actually. Locked or Deleted threads is not a punishment, it's just a control measure.

I have seen more than one player get a personal warning about using the F-word on the forums where I come from, and if they misstep again, bam... permanent ban. And not only the username... the e-mail address and payment details as well, so you couldn't just sign up for another account to carry on (at least, not easily). This made for a very mature player base. I do understand though that Guild Software might not be in a financial position to just ban paying customers as easily as that.

I understand now that the RoC as posted on the website here is more of a guideline than rules, and that consequences are decided on a case by case basis, instead of just applied blindly. Is it more fair? Perhaps, perhaps not... Who is to judge? I certainly can't, but at least I understand now how it works. Another thing this n00b has been educated in ;-)
May 27, 2011 Dr. Lecter link
And, evidently, one of the few things in which you have been educated. Might I suggest that a course in brevity, clarity, and succinctness be your next didactic dalliance?
May 27, 2011 blood.thirsty link
me totally agree with ye WhiteRC, trollin' in forum is unacceptable!

Dont be so shy! Let's take a step ferwerd!
Replace da ingame chat system by a preformatted and controlled messages list instead of typin' whatever could get inside vo base players perverted minds
let's also ban players who engage in non consensual pvp and kill newbs!

And replace ships by gentle pink ponies!

But please dont take da pretty roids away!

Vote fer da moral majority!
Do not worry, whatever happens i'll be right behind ye!

and/or infrequent use of strong language

Alright, I laughed at that.

He does have a point though. These forums are, when compared to other game forums, extremely vulgar. I made a post on it before, Hunter, quoting the RoC, and incarnate said he was planning to deal with it. It's the best we can hope for. http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/24770
May 28, 2011 HuntrCkr link
Thanx for the link tarenty... Nice to see not everyone in here is 13 years old ;-)

nah. some of us are whiny eight year olds.
May 28, 2011 vskye link
Wow, this thread is still open?

First, Doc.. good call. ;)

An as far as HuntrCkr goes, well ya dude ya failed. Btw, GFY means "Go Fu*k Yourself". I'd explain it further but Whistler would yell at me.

On another note: I really don't understand why newbs don't read the forums and the training missions anymore? I mean, when I was a newb I didn't ask all these bs questions.. well, cause I read the forums, an actually did the tutorial missions an such. Lazy new generation.
