navigate to the sector's center

Mar 12, 2011 NX-74205 link
Sometimes you get lost in a sector - especially if the sector is empty (no station, no asteroids). If you are too far away from the sector's center you cannot find other ships - neither enemies nor friends.

Since the trick to jump out and in again is somewhat long-winded and not allowed in a few missions, it would be very nice to have the possibility to set a navpoint (like a jump point) right into the sector's center.

I would appreciate it very much if you could add this feature.

Yes, this would be a smart and helpful feature. It's pretty much essential.

Could just be a command like /show_center_point. I definitely wouldn't want it showing all the time, only when I need it.

Perhaps it could be an icon on the radar that, instead of the regular radar icons which fade out as you get farther away, fades in as you get farther from the center.

This could be a stepping stone to the ability to mark specific areas in important sectors.

That is an excellent idea slime.

it also opens the door to an auto pilot.....

this would be nice for missions as we have no way to force spawning near the player so if they became lost because they were fighting some npcs for 10 min they can find their way back

No more than a jump point or wormhole already does Pa.

This would be very helpful.

You can already do this to a certain degree, when you jump into a sector and plot a course, the "Jump Point" always stays the same no matter where you move around. You can use this to get back somewhat close to where you were. Exactly where if you use the position of the stars and planets to line up.

abortretryfail: Yes, very good idea! But most beginners do not think about this, and even experienced players sometimes forget to do so.

I would like to suggest an alternative to the Navpoint in the sector's center:

The radar display could be used to show the sector's center, e.g. by showing a grey point. But - I think this is important - this marker should be displayed only if there are no other objects shown on the radar. Thereby it would not be confusing during regular game actions.

What do you think?

P.S.: Sorry slime73, I just saw your idea! +1 to it! I did not want to steal it. :-)
Imho it's better than my previously suggested navpoint solution.

it could be an option right along with "show 3000m Nav point" in HUD settings

With regards to sector navigation, they got this feature right in the game "X2: The Threat" with the "Ecliptic Projector" that lays a green grid "deck" in your HUD representing the z=0 plane, and whatever the piece of gear that projected both the X=0 and Y=0 walls. your hud then displayed x,y,z coordinates based on sector center. Storms could render these null, perhaps...

Now I'm craving Meat-Steak Kahunas...

Totally dig the "Ecliptic Projector" idea, but that's a definite deja vu on these forums. +1

Ecliptic has it's uses, but I prefer what we have for most use in VO - easier to line up with stuff. What I'd like is to have both kinds - the normal ones on the left/right, and an ecliptic in the middle. All three should be optional. Then we can really confuse the newbies :)
