I'm pretty new to this game, I'm a trader and my preference in game is to fly around the universe, avoiding ion storms, pirates, hive bots and doing trade missions.

However, I'd like to improve my combat licence and there isn't really much choice, the only missions I've found are the beginner and advanced bot missions and I already dislike doing that.

I'd like to suggest adding some more interesting tactical/combat missions, for instance espionage, sabotage, seek and destroy, blockades against Hive, hit and run, pilferage, classified data retrieval and 'white washing'.

Level up a little bit. Once you hit combat level 3, a wider range of missions becomes available.

I do agree that we need more and more interesting ones though. And that is something we can actually impact ourselves - if you join the PCC (Player Contribution Corps) you can create new missions and try to get them into the game. I joined a month or so ago, and started working on some stuff before life got in my way for a bit. Things are settling down again though, so maybe I can start getting some stuff done this month.

The missions CrazySpence is talking about are the Gauntlet and Rogue Queen missions

One of the missions on there is actually called "Search and Destroy", you just have to play a couple other missions to get to it. You could also try going to any capitol station and playing the Rogue Drones tree... that should get you up to Combat 3 at which point more options become available.

We could always use more people in the PCC once you get 25 hours of game time logged; even if you don't write any missions you can help playtest the new ones out there.
