Suggestion thread about minor factions

Ok, no more rum for Serco/Itani/UIT! It's boring to play one nation whole game-life! Especially when you're tri-KOS.

If player is POS to minor faction allow him apply to its membership.

1. Only 1 minor faction at a time allowed.
2. When applied to minor faction, all other faction standings drop (not raise) to neutral. Or even worse if player applies to Corvus.
3. Nickname color = minor faction color.
4. Some items require to be that minor faction member (not just reputation). E.g. sell storm radar extenders only to XX faction members, so to purchase it you need to be XX. This may open some sort of black market and expend gameplay.
5. Make it as a mission. "Apply to membership, citizenship, whatever".

If devs can't automate it, maybe it's possible to create "Application form" on our website, where you write to devs your character name, new minor faction and reason why you want to change it from Serco or whatever. And let's make it 5-10 EUR or smth like that for every minor faction change if money is the problem. ;)

E.g. I will pay devs some money they ask if they change SP's faction to Corvus :]

[EDIT]Moreover I will pay these bucks for every my character! :) Devs -- that's business!
[EDIT2] And make license requirements: e.g. 10 combat
[EDIT3] Or make it available for those who pay for 12 months sub ;)

[EDIT4] Ok, let's make it as an auction! How much will you pay to change you major faction character to minor faction? I'll start: 100 bucks or 2-year sub if devs change Shadow Phantom faction to Corvus.

Well, I'll get back in the game and resub if you allow me to play for minor factions.

Disagree. It should depend on the faction and it's RP(i.e. Valent would have dislike with Axia, but respect with Biocom).

But... +1. Needs a lot of polish.

Aye, if it is possible it'd great if all standings would be automatically set depending on minor faction.

I acknowledge that an unaligned tag for at least Tri-KoS players is a must for a faction update that should be in place as soon as possible.

However, the primary priority should be to add to major faction conflicts (Itani versus Serco) and not this rainbow faction choice bull. A proper bi-faction conflict with interesting, re-playable, and polished gameplay is a must for any MMO, especially for a small community like ours.

Thing is, if you have rainbow nations, you could start wars between the various factions as well.

It basically depends on the dev's vision for the game. Do they want to have a single (dull and uninteresting to most) conflict, far away from where most players are, or do they want that particular conflict to present a background for a fragmented and changing backyard, ie. Grey space.

So, to spell it out, you can have two visions.

1. Keep it as is. All minor factions work together peacefully. Only the Itani/Serco conflict is a "hot" war (and I say hot in the most generous way. Fighting in the same friggin sector for years on end...sigh).

2. The Serco/Itani conflict is still a hot war. But, the council of Seven has decided that they were cheated on their deal with Valent and decided to issue letters of marque to everybody, including declaring Valent KOS. For a bit off course, until their expenses are met. Then they will work together again and some other conflict will evolve. This way you have an evolving story (yays for RP, yays for stories, yays for content) where nationalism can still be your focus.

So, I kinda completely and totally disagree with you Shankie. My hope is that the devs WON'T go down the same route as everybody else. My hope is that they keep on showing the spirit that has kept the company going and take their own route instead.

Oh, and as a post-script: Screw the tri-KOS unaligned tag request. The tri-KOS designation is a leftover from the past. If players choose to be tri-KOS, it is their prerogative, the mere fact that they ARE tri-KOS is a statement in itself, why should they be unaligned?.
Even the most hated and feared people in history still had a "faction" or country of origin. Blackbeard, the friendly pirate, was an English pirate, not a non-aligned pirate despite him preying on everything afloat.
That said, I would LOVE to have an unaligned tag, like minor tags, but they should be earned/bought/stolen/something else

oh, and peace to y'all

Well, Serco/Itani is major conflict and we could have local conflicts, including Axia<->Valent, Corvus<->TPG, etc. I don't see the problem if this brings new players.

Thing is, if you have rainbow nations, you could start wars between the various factions as well.

You completely left out the option, Whytee, to focus on extending the Serco/Itani conflict to more than just Deneb. Also, I'm pretty sure that rainbow nation conflicts having a complete monopoly over anything going on in grey space would draw players away from the Itani/Serco conflict and not keep it a "hot" war. Besides, the minor faction conflicts are supposed to be covert and behind the scenes rivalries; and while I think there should be options similar to Itani/Serco faction level exclusivity for rivaling corporations, it would simply make no sense to focus on total faction changes for those factions when instead we can be promoting more needed roleplay rivalry and gameplay for Red vs. Blue.

To put this in terms of an Occam's Razor approach, Itani vs. Serco is the basic conflict in this game, the one that a huge majority of the backstory is centered around, and with simplistic, persistent, and fun gameplay it should always provide roleplay and combat where a dynamic prototype may or may not. To think that we can start with fixing a complex system and then focus on the game's basic conflict, without doing it the other way around, is simply naive.

Oh, and an unaligned tag is a simple gameplay fix, not a roleplay dimension... as a UIT player with Tri-KoS is likely not to be too friendly with a regular UIT newbie. Unless you think otherwise...?

ShankTank, I don't think my tri-KOS characters are UIT or Serco. They've got different RP and no connection with all major factions and especially they don't care on border conflicts. Why should they be red or yellow? Why there are dark green Corvus NPC's and no Corvus faction players?

There should be an option to leave home faction forever and apply to another one, even minor.

If there are technical problems with chat color, then maybe let's do all players similar color? :}

And I think new playable factions will bring $$ and new players to VO.

Whatever makes role-play better is good, unless it breaks some game mechanics. I believe this is not breaking anything.

For leaving major faction to a minor faction (once in character life): +1

+1 to players joining minor factions.
-TBH, when you take a voy for faction Z, you should be flying under Z's flag, not your own nation. When mission ends, player returns to his nation.
-There should be two options, one like above, a "temporary hire", and another to become a full-time employee abdicating your native nation.

+1e99 for new PIRATE faction. Black, rainbow, whatever.
-Then BAN all those nasty pirates. Once you are KoS with your home nation, you can join pirate faction. Or another minor faction.
And "Pirate Nation" should be homed with Corvus, despite making clear Corvus is not pirate in itself.

+
This would fix 95% of IFF problems today. AND improve a lot the gameplay, expanding the "reachable" universe.
+

Also, I'd pay another 6m subs for that! (But only after we are flying cappies)
Feb 01, 2011 astib link
Strong -1 against PIRATE faction and any other new faction. We have lots of them. Being pirate/corsair/whatever you move on vertical across of all factions. Its so obvious!

And no, PIRATE faction won't fix anything. The KOS status (or faction standings) shows it all, its a label itself.
Feb 01, 2011 ryan reign link
Actually Astib, we currently have a shortage of pirates. Nearly every pirate I've talked to in my years playing would likely come back if they could play Corvus or a sub-faction.

That aside, playable sub factions makes a great jump point for having an Order of Akan ingame presence.
Feb 01, 2011 tarenty link
A pirate faction would help. Many pirates do not have tri-KOS or even one KOS. (I'm looking at you Maalik) >.>
