And while we are at it: Deneb conflict
In order to make the war in Deneb count, it would be absolutely cool to actually be able to dominate a conquered sector.
So, if the Serco wins a sector, place some turrets in it with a smattering of fighters as close in defenders. If the Itani wants to own the sector, they need to clear it out and hold it until they can "tow in" some turrets and defenders.
Now, all this would be completely irrelevant when you can just jump from wh to wh. So, make it impossible to jump from wh to wh, make "reefs" of ion storms where you have to jump through contested space in order to get to whatever war sector you need to go to.
This way, if the Itani takes all the sectors, they will dominate Deneb. The Serco can still fly it, from ionstorm to ionstorm and then to the sector they want to hit, but they cannot just jump as they feel like it. If they want to attack three sectors in, they may have to attack two other sectors first, making them important to the Itani to defend. Voila, tactics in the conflict.
"He who holds the upper ground, can shoot further."
Again, comment, ignore, flame, agree, disagree, discuss.

I had thought that something like this was what was planned to be done with the fogged sectors. Regardless, most of that makes entirely too much sense to have implemented.
This would require that players can actually initiate a mission for a specific sector. Way to complicated. Best to leave it to some randomizing algorithm.
You forgot biting sarcasm ;)

Fuck, yeah.
Ehm, on that note Fluffster, anything you and I agree upon is bound to
1. Never Happen
2. Be flamed to Hell and back
3. Result in a major incendiary namecalling
4. Fuck 100 up completely
Hooray.

I like the concept a lot, though I wouldn't like having the visual and radar limitations of an ion storm in all of these sectors. Something permanent that interferes with jumps and appears on maps, but doesn't have other effects would be awesome. Alternately, a xith roid half the size of a planet could be arbitrarily declared to be impossible to pass by outside of normal space, and those could be scattered about the middle of Deneb. The stuff glows green - it must do *something* other than make N3s.
roid sectors in deneb already work similar to that, they start off as itani of course cause its our damn system but if a serco won the fighter skirmish the turret is theres. this should be system wide including stations
