Small Port Proximity Mine and/or a Large Port Magnetic Mine
The idea behind this small proximity mine launcher is that it would have less force and concussive power (say one sixth of the existing proximity mine launcher), but that each mine drop would release not one but three "bomblets". Think of the bomb glove from the Ratchet and Clank series -- a small spread of small mines, instead of just one large mine.
The total explosive power would still be half that of a large proximity mine launcher, but with the advantage of spread. The device should carry fifteen mines, which represents five mine launches (half the number of launches in a Proximity Mine Launcher).
Barring that, it would be great to have Magnetic Mines -- say max speed 50 m/s with the ability to detect a ship within 500 m. Just that little bit extra to help the mine on its way. Like the Lightning Mine Launcher, the Magnetic Mine Launcher should only hold four mines.

For the main bit of your suggestion, all you have to do is press left, right, up, machine gun. For the magnetic variety, you do left, right, down, machine gun. Get with the program people!

In seriousness, I could only support a magnetic mine if it behaved the way the one from V8 did. Anything else just wouldn't do it for me.
Cluster mines sounds cool.
