instead of constantly nerfing ships weapons should have a penalties added to them. This is how most FPS games handle dual wielding or letting a player use a extra cool super uber rocket launcher.
I propose some of the following changes to weapons that would fix many of the problems people seem to gripe about.
locust swarms stay the same but ad plus 3 to your ships drain.
chaos swarms ad plus 5.
iceflares get a -3m to their prox fuse for each one equpied
star flares -4m
sunflares -5m
(ie instead of a prox of 30 for both they would each have a prox of 27. and so on.)
gattling cannon lowers your spin torque by 2
gattling turret lowers spin torque by 3
(each subsequent turret does not lower it by any more)
for all energy weapons the auto aim function is reduced by 10% for each weapon of the same kind.
I think these changes would be much more benneficial then nerfing or buffing ships based on what they might be loaded out with versus what they are actually loaded out with.

+1 (this would give a whole new meaning to ship customization, since slots would actually affect how your ship handles)
+1 hmm, having to think about load out would also bring my olde hog back.
+1 for consideration
Though I suspect this may make VO feel like one of those D&D games ;)

sounds like it's worth a shot, it can always be changed back later if it sucks.
They never do, though, LNH.

It simply would result in similar weapons grouping. Like, instead of 3xN3, use N1+N2+N3. Or AAP+Posi+N3...

chaos swarms ad plus 5.
So, no more soloing queens? Or we should equip a rag with Chaos + Locust + gemini + firefly + yellowjacket ?

I like the drain concept but the spin torque is silly because the weight of these items already screws that up
so +0.5?
so +0.5?
actually i take that back nerfing in any regard is stupid
-1000
also i would like to add
shut up whiners (who cause nerfing)

I don't know whether this is a good idea or a bad idea, but it is an interesting idea.
"+1... I'm looking for a reason why swarms would increase energy drain, but +1 regardless."
Hmm, maybe we can make the broken physics system work for us there. Swarms have a maximum speed of around 80 m/s. Maybe the reason for that is their processors can only process fast enough to handle those speeds under normal conditions. Turbo enables you to exceed those speeds, which requires overclocking the swarms to keep up, which uses more power and also puts more strain on the cooling systems, causing them to need more power as well. That power has to come from somewhere.

Then it accomplishes the same purpose. You can choose between using multiples of your single favorite weapon operating at less than full capacity, or you can trade a couple of them for "lesser" weapons in exchange for keeping all weapons at full capacity.
As for queening, why would you need to change loadout? A rag has 50 e/s drain, so using two chaos swarms would just result in having a 60 e/s drain, which I believe is still enough to build your stack and crack the shield.

+1 withdrawn.
Tar you never +1'd in the first place.
Anyways I like this idea +1

I deleted it, of course. Pizzasgood's first quote is my post.

We already have handling penalties for weapons... it's called mass.
IIRC, there's already a system in place to add a load to the ship based on weapons' energy needs... it's just not implemented yet.

Gunther Hermann,
have you actually read the thread?
P.S. Mass is not penalty, it's characteristic.. and by the way bigger mass of weapon is not disadvantage at all. Some pilots like to balance total ship weight for comfortable head-to-head PvP.

this isn't D&D we don't need +10 charisma +8 move -10 awesome attributes. If it isn't weight, grid or ship variant based it sucks
add another -9000 to mine
add another -9000 to mine
yes lets nerf the gat cannon some more as if the thing doesn't suck enough...
