Civilian Trident Rental for groups (First step into player owned cappies)
Backgrounds:
* Question to the devs about player owned capital ships and the future of VO
* Trident Rental
* Increased cargo capacity for Capships?
* Possible way to make tridents work for players
* Six Port Mining Trident
Considering that VO is an in constant evolution and will change this implementation into a more complete one with multi-level keys, bigger stations able to dock tridents, so on, but as FIRST STEP:
* CIVILIAN TRIDENT RENTAL FOR GROUPS:
For 6Mc credits, a player GROUP can rent a trident. Tridents are available only in capitals. If the players return the trident to the station where they rent it, they get 5Mc back as collateral. The net rental fee is therefore 1Mc.
-Trident enters the station sector flown by a NPC. Once one member of group dock to trident, the NPC launches using a centurion and dock to station.
-First member of group to dock becomes pilot. Others are gunners. If pilot leaves, another group member must launch and dock again to become pilot.
-To return Trident, one member of group must park it in originating station and press {Finish} button in mission tab. Then a NPC leaves station and docks to trident. Then when last player lauches from trident the NPC take it away.
-If all players in group leave the trident, it will park where it is, and not defend itself, but cannot (yet) be conquered. It remains parked as long as the group exists, i.e., at least one member is online.
-If group is disbanded, mission fails, no refund, and Trident is considered abandoned, so autopilot will try to take it back to base (warp away).
-Rental lasts until ship is returned, destroyed or abandoned.
-Repairs are not available at stations, require repair modules.
Requirements:
-The group leader must be POS with local faction, and have all licenses >=9.
-The group must have at least 2 members docked at local station to mission appear.
* Ownership:
-Trident remains owned by its original faction. Standings penalties are applied to all players in group, exactly as if they were gunners.
-Only group members can become pilot.
-Docking permission remains as-is. Anyone who can dock to owner faction's cappies will be able to dock to rented trident. (Most urgent upgrades: guild-owned, use keys)
* Options: (Mission offers 4 models)
-Aggressor: 4 Gauss turrets
-Defensive: 2 Gauss + 2 Swarms turrets
-Multirole: 1 mining + 1 repair + 1 gauss + swarm turrets
-Miningrig: 3 mining + 1 Gauss turrets
NEW: Mining turret must be implemented, with stats similar to a mining beam mk.II
First Civilian Version limitations:
-Time-limited offer, so if it unbalances game, simply retract.
-Reduced or NO shields!
-Docking bay limited to 600cu - Ships size
-Faction hits caused by trident affects all group members
-Controls/HUD are exactly the same as any ship
-Pilot cannot use own turrets, unless he launches, another member of group becomes pilot, then he dock again
* Wishlist: (long-term enhancements)
-Mining turret (short term, also usable in atlas/moths)
-Allows alternate as Pilot/Gunner without lauching/redocking
-Enable Guilds to own it, as a long-term group
-Key-based control, at least with owner and user keys
-Load/unload between docked ships and trident
-RENAMING SHIP (and painting)
-Ship-based trade (shop+bank)
-Used and new tridents for sale (player-owned)
* Comments
-No change required to game engine, IFF, AI, etc.
-Smart group and ship management can make the rental last forever, resulting in a perfect home for guilds.
-Licenses and standing requirements TBF, first proposal is group leader have POS and at least 9/9/9/9/9.
-Comments, additions and improvements welcome

As allways, this is simply a proposal. Incarnate have the final word on when to implement this, within their priorities. But since last news stating that Tridents are near, I hope this could help making it sooner than Soon(tm).
Maybe I am late and Guild Sw already have player owned cappies all planned and ready to implement...

Most rentals have a time limit to them so the rate should be 1 million per 24 hours.
The other item is how mining xp is awarded. I am assuming it to be split equally between the group members....

4 out of 5 dentists prefer it.
This does not address the user interface needed for capital ship piloting (I think that's still in the works?). There's no way to pilot it. The UI would need to be completed first, and then I'd rather just make my own instead of rent one. This would require more time on the devs' part.
Perhaps after we get the ability to make a capship, we could rent them to those who didn't have access to conquerable stations or something. It needs polish, and needs to wait, but it has promise.

Tarenty, a trident is not a capital ship. Too small, only 4 guns, small crew.
It is closer to a small freighter, or more precisely, a brig from sailing age navy, or a modern Patrol Boat, which is smaller than corvettes and frigates.
They don't need the dedicated HUD, special controls, tactical center and other stuff a capital ship - the flagship controlling a fleet - requires to complete its duty.
For every practical aspect, a Trident is a bigger and heavier Behemoth with shields, with only one turret more. Connies and HACs can be considered cappies...

Why? I mean, if your a miner I'd think you'd want HD beams on the dang thing if you have met the license requirements.

Yeah. I'm no miner so I have little sense of the differences between beams. But I would think that if you were going to have 3 or 4 people mine in a trident, that would have to somehow be more efficient than those 3 or 4 people mining in individual ships, each of which would have several mining beams. So it would either need a very large cargo hold, or mining turrets that are more effective than any normal mining beam.

Tridents are defined as capital class vessels, Frigates to be more specific. Do not attempt to change this. We all know you think Tridents aren't worthy of capital ship title, but they are. In any case, they're still too large to pilot using the existing UI.

Complementary idea for mining turrets:
They do not require the gunner to operate. Only to aim and engage mining beam. Then he can leave "this" turret and proceed to next turret, so on. just like regular mining beams, they will auto-mine until the trident exceed its reach or complete cargo.
It even makes possible to 2 owners launch from a parked trident and mine with another ship... Is that promissing enough?
And pirates should be interested in an abandoned, ultra expensive trident? Ransom 1Mc? Its return worth at least 5Mc...
Owners, instead, can keep one defensive turret working while the other lauches from a Valk to patrol around...
Later, a HD Mining Turret. Lets start simple...
It is almost like seen RL technological evolution...
