This is for the distant future- after more important elements have been completed.
Allow players to 'bribe' certain stations to sabotage a players ship in any of the following ways...
1) Cause turbo to become disabled after X jumps.
2) Cause weapons to become disabled or 'misfire'
3) Cause ship to xplode at jump X or give the player who ordered the sabotage the ability to blackmail and control whether targeted ship xplodes or not.
4) Cause targeted ship to lose 50% armor as soon as combat starts.
Also, allow players to out pay the station to have the sabotage canceled or reversed onto the original saboteur.
Two options for implementing. One, both players in station at same time. Two, player one pays for sabotage on next pilot who docks. Should affect active ship only.
Three obvious benefits are a) CREDIT SINK! b) adds to immersion c) fun and funny as hell.

+ a whole lot! Adds a new type of player interaction and could drive RP situations.
No, players should not be able to do anything from the safety of the station. Besides, we'll be seeing a bunch of bots station camping and sabotaging the ships of anyone who docks.
This would simply be exploitable, frustrating, and all-in-all discouraging of actual combat. Most likely to be used by the type that do nothing but spam convoys from in-station. Not to mention you did not cover the issue of super-rich players spamming this against regular players.
I rank this up there with the various "allow players to send pirates viruses and bombs" suggestions... this is even more poorly thought out than those, however.

+1 kinda.
SharkTank does have a point, so a refined version of this would be fun I think. Limit it to like 1 or 2 times a day, alts ARE included in this limit, etc.
Btw. this wouldn't be targeted at pirates specifically, so ya. ;)

This is an idea that even Alloh would have thought about and then said, Nah, that's just too fucking retarded to even consider posting!
Since you objected to it Lecter, it's valid.
Bad idea... but, as anything except lelecter, it can be improved:
Make few stations offer used ships and parts for much lower price and requirements. And offer very cheap items that can work for weeks, or minutes.
OR make it as an addon, that requires one to bump against targeted ship to cause the (delayed) sabotage, like some sort of magnetic disruptor device.
But, to be honest, would be a "disposable" trap, triggered only once by each neubie, and too much waste of Devs resources.

5) Pay one of the maintenance crew to attach a 'Student Pilot' sticker on the back of victims ship.
6) Introduce small, round, furry, fast multiplying creatures into the cargo hold.
7) Paint the ship with unicorns and rainbows.
[Edit: Don't you move it, Whistler... We Be On Topic]

8) Stuff dismembered pony parts into crucial cooling and exhaust ports.
9) "Kick Me" sign added to the back of a ship.
lmao
Its fine some of you don't like this suggestion, but please do try to keep the reasons plausible.
Lets see...
Waste of Dev resources... What part of 'distant future' do you not get? This suggestion is nothing more than a seed for the devs to consider as part of their long term direction. If it grows great, if not the world will surely end.
players should not be able to do anything from the safety of the station... A valid position. One I don't fully agree with, but valid non the less.
we'll be seeing a bunch of bots station camping and sabotaging the ships of anyone who docks... A legitimate concern, but as an argument, nonsense since the commands can and should be withheld from player access in Lua.
This would simply be exploitable, frustrating, and all-in-all discouraging of actual combat... How, why and I thought we were moving away from space quake? One would think the victim would have a clue that they just got screwed and not dock at that station for the near term, at least while suspected saboteurs are in the area.
"Not to mention you did not cover the issue of super-rich players spamming this against regular players...." This one never fails to make me laugh. Everyone in VO is either rich or would be if they put a bit of effort into the game. You presume that players that have been around for years and actively played the game- even when there was no one around to shoot- are suddenly going to change their habits and sit in a station and try to screw with people. And even if they did, why should it matter. Just avoid the station for a while. This argument is just as pathetic as the complaints about the highly skilled players flying around blowing up, pirating, whatever the 'regular' or newer players.
Now I'm not intending to defend my suggestion. But really, one viable argument that is more a matter of opinion or preference, and a few sad attempts at how this might negatively affect the overall game?

No, Fluff, you misunderstand! We like this suggestion!
10) Infect the ships computer with a digital version of Tourette's Syndrome
11) Weapons fire changed to sound like a squeeze toy.

I, for one, would never do such a thing. No way.
Now, I would, however, transfer the necessary amount of credits to an alt account's character(s), and run the script on a spare computer for S&Gs.

Yes, and I'll bet within a day or two, there would be other people talking up Odia M14 or where ever to get the gullible and newbs to go dock there. And it would be funny and good. And all would be right with VO.
Besides, that would be very much in keeping with your known habits ;)

Anything that gets people to play is not a waste of the devs time....
Not sure running a few script bots just to piss people off counts as "playing."
Unless you're Nahin or something.

12) Change the player's HUD to Pony themed
13) Change the player's HUD to all pink
14) Swap hails for something random
Has anybody seen my pony?

I saw some gibs over in Odia, kiddo. Same pony, different gibs, over in Deneb.

Hooves on bare vacuum.
Neighing in the empty woods.
Seen a space pony?
This enables people to spend money, but does not encourage player interaction. There are enough possibilities that do both that this falls well behind.
