I think a more important issue is getting those customers to stay for an extended period of time, as a higher constant population is better than 3x that amount of people coming and leaving in 2 weeks, although improving the 'first impression' etc is very important too.
Agreed. The beginning is, by a long shot, the absolute worst part of the game. Mission content and the economy come at a close second and third.
When the game has a slick introduction with great tutorials, comprehensive documentation, a vibrant player economy, more incentives for goal- and plot-based player combat, and a revised travel system with more wormhole connections to opposite ends of the universe, then I don't think we'll have any trouble either attracting or keeping new players.

I disagree. By the time someone has played a few weeks they have a pretty good idea if this is the game for them. Some people are hooked. Some are not.
It is a simple numbers game. For every x number of people that try the game, y number of people will be hooked. Getting new players to try the game is far more important than trying to salvage a few on the edge.

I am talking about the first 8 hours, which don't allow the player to experience very much of the game. What the player does and sees in the deserted sectors of nation space is in no way representative, or even indicative, of what he will be doing once his trial ends. This is why I think it is important to add another wormhole connection to Deneb, and also between several other points: once it becomes easier to get around, players will, I think, be in nation space much more frequently. This will mean a much more exciting game for people still in their trial, although, as I said, I still think the introductory missions and tutorials need to be improved, as well.

24 hour trial, a few grey systems between Cantus, Betheshee, and Arta Caelestis?
I have to agree with the comments regarding nation space.
Personally, I enjoy the game a lot. And while I intellectually know there are a decent number of players around when I am, the fact is that given my lower level licenses, and relative lack of skills in terms of combat, etc... I never see any of them, because they're all gallivanting around in the more dangerous areas. Those areas are more fun because there are more people there.
Now I mean, I'm slowly getting to the point where I'll at least be able to go there and pretend to have some skill, if not actually hold my own against some less than amazing players, but it's taken many hours to be able to do that.
Add in the fact that going from Deneb to grey space takes forever, even in the fastest ship... It's very difficult to get to the multi-player aspect of the game, even with more than 8 hours.

FWIW, though I didn't find my 8 hour trial long enough to know whether I wanted to sub, it was definitely long enough that I knew it would be worth spending $10 to be able to play for a month, which gave me time to decide whether to sub.
