Although capships will indeed increase the number of players online by a bit, Vendetta Online has been in a steady, slow population decline from the day it was released. Just like most other games, including MMOs. There is reason to remain calm, because although the amount of active players hasn't increased dramatically recently, it has not decreased dramatically recently either. Nothing is out of the ordinary.
Of course, I'm not saying it's a good thing that there aren't more players, I'm just saying it's completely expected if you were to study the data a bit.

The reasons I want to see capships in game may differ from others that just want to fly one around to trade or whatever. I'm looking for to seeing how it would effect things like the weekly Nation War and capturable station battles. If each Nation had a Trident each there to repair/reload and players on the turrets popping off fighter craft. There will have to be some serious strategy adjustments by all sides. The battles in capturable stations sectors would be alot shorter I think as well. Cappie turrets would take down the station turrets pretty effectively if you keep the Trident angled correctly at a distance.
Hi. Yes. I was working towards this as recently as a couple of weeks ago. Then some big opportunities came up that demanded a re-focus Right Now. I will come back to it.
Forgive the bump please, but I really don't understand this:
What is the big issue with flying a capital ship?
What is the big goal/drive of a capital ship?
Historically, aren't capital naval ships just giant ships that require large support fleets to keep them from being sitting ducks?
(Yea, a capital warship might be a heavy hitter, able to attack coastal targets, and a capital carrier might be able to launch fighters to protect itself, but generally speaking they can't maneuver, can't attack something that can dodge, and are kinda lame without their support ships.)

Key, I want a cappie because I am bored and I don't have one yet.
The care bears want a cappie because of the increased cargo hold, so they can trade in the near complete safety of nation space. And if access to cappies goes the way its looking like it will (Manufacture them from the conquerable stations) only the four largest guilds will ever have them anyways. So cappies are completely irrelevant.

I'm sure the evil players will enjoy hunting them as they are less likely to be empty like the npc ones
I personally don't think they would be fun to pilot but they would make a nice repair base

The only interests I would have in having a capship are:
A. Mobile repair base
B. Sacking stations
C. Making unsuspecting people crap themselves
And none of those are very major. Unless we get some really interesting turret port items or capships have special abilities, I don't personally care too much about them. I'm a fighter pilot, not a captain.

The user interface. The way VO currently is, you can't really fly well in third person mode. With a ship as big as a Trident, flying without hitting every other asteroid would be difficult enough, but with a Connie or HAC? There's also docking the capital ship, controlling turrets, and docking bay management to consider.

B. Sacking stations
C. Making unsuspecting people crap themselves
+1. Add to that, a well-defended mobile command center for guilds, a way to transport a number of ships from one place to another, and something to spend time making or working to get.

And something to spend time destroying, don't forget that part. Arguably the best part.
I agree with almost all this, except calling the trident a capship. It can be a perfect FLAGSHIP for a guild.
The now existing interface may not be proper for flying HAC, Teradon and Connies, but for tridents they are good enough.
All the cons raised so far are addressed in
Civilian Trident Rental for groups (First step into player owned cappies). Just replace the rental with sell after a "beta" stage. Ownership, docking rights, turrets usage, etc.
To make sure that traders will not consider a trident invencible, the civilian version should have a very reduced shield, or even no shield at all to increase storage. I cracked many, solo, in Border Skirmishes. Easier than a queen. Imagine with reduced shields?

ALSO.
But not restricted to Corvus. It would be cool to start with Corvus, then other factions make their offers in reply.

I am fine waiting for the devs' to be happy with their first public release of cappies. Let the playerbase decide how they are best useful and or fun. It has been too common a request for too long to say it is irrelevant or the wrong direction for vo.
I want a Connie and/or HAC to safely transport my mining team into bot sectors, load up a huge hold and have a party as we head to market! I want a team of terradons to crush the levi without clearing all the crit hives or in-sector queens. At the very least, a trident will be able to take some newer players into larger hive skirmishes than they could survive solo, offering a repair base in-sector. I know it may not be worth all the time & effort, but that has not stopped badge-seekers before.
Yes, everyone will HATE having their hard-won manufacturing marathon destroyed by those who must destroy, but those of us who want to command cappies must face the no-win scenario.

Alot of people in the main guilds want the constellation... If it is true that the number of commodities is more. Then everyone should look on the trident list... +1 for Connie!
put that shovel of yers where da sun never shines necrohun : )
