Fix Ion storm radar range

Aug 30, 2010 pirren link
Radar range, situation atm:
Ship without radar: ~400m
Ship with small radar: ~1400m
Ship with large radar: ~2400m

Suggested radar range (for player ships, not NPC):
Ship without radar, range: 0m
Small radar range: 1500m
Large radar range: 2500m

The idea is that player vessel without radar, can't select target. So if ship is blind - it is blind, fight without autoaim, swarms, etc.. or install storm radar extender.

Thread hijack: Can we get Radar Extenders to stack to a maximum of 5km (two heavy and a small extender would stack to 5km)?

then they should stack to built in radar and work without ion storm too.

Ship without radar, range: 0m <--- yarr!!

Interesting. That would also disable the proximity alert. Hmm, and it would make it hard/impossible to use homing missiles (which makes sense, because the ion storm should hamper their guidance systems). I like.

But wouldn't this also prevent the ability to mine in a storm? So maybe it would need to be more like 50-100m, so that you can still target roids.

Pizzasgood, I suggest to turn off autoaim for players, not NPÑ or mines ;)

Well, anyways disabling proximity and therefore fix flares in ion storm is also win.

The only players that get caught in storms are either new, or escorting a voy.

Take 100 storms.

90 are empty, and just waste time. Especially the 16 k one at the top end of Initros.

8 have hive bots which are just quietly mining , and you just fly past.

2 have Hive bots that are nasty, and might need a fight. Killing a pair of arklans without being able to target them would be a challenge.

I understand Pirren that you want to be able to sit in a storm, then have a cheap kill on any passing player that can't target you to fight back. It wouldn't happen. You would just sit in a storm getting bored while the majority of us fly round it, or straight through it quickly with a voy.

What it would do is leave new players in a state of confusion. Stuck in a storm, no way to target any hive ( or pirren ) that attacks them, not even able to see roids on radar so they can get out ?

Nope, it would just lead to frustration and rapid exits from vo by new folk that just get blown up from a bot they cant see approaching.

Daft idea.

Don't see problem, they have three options: fly to ion storm exit point, die from mob or /explode.

Yes, new folk need to know that Ion storm brings death and it's not just a decoration.

-1.

Storms would be 10 X as annoying as they are now, and stay completely useless (as the extra XP for botting in storm was removed).

Autoaim isn't the issue, targeting is. If the radar is reduced to 0, you can't target anything. But to mine a roid you have to target it.

Unless it were made to only affect radar vs. ship and not radar vs. roid.

Probably easier to just have a 30m radar. You'd have to get closer to the roid, but that's fine. RP-wise, the ions are disrupting your funky mining beam, so it loses range.

I do kind of agree with davejohn that ion storms are somewhat pointless currently, but I don't have a problem with at least making them a bit more dangerous, and making them require a different fighting style.

And they don't only catch noobs and escorts. They also catch people who are in a hurry or lazy and don't bother to plot around them, or people who get caught in one by accident (they don't realize there were roids in their path).

You want to shoot people outside their range in an ion storm? Use your own extender and learn railguns. I've used that with lots of success in station defense when it was stormed up.

In a storm, someone with just a small-port storm radar extender already has a pretty significant advantage over someone who does not

meridian, 400m is more than enough for convenient and effective fight, PvP and PvE.

Pizzasgood, ye, it's a good idea about 30m range for built-in radar.

People usually just zoom right through ion storms, all this'd do is make it much more viable to use them tactically, which we need much more of :P

Edit: keep in mind that group members would still be visible, so it shouldn't have too much impact on keeping up with an escort if yer escorting...
