SSS: SubSpace Storm
This is a more logical alternative to ion storms. Makes no sense that an ion storm occupies all sector, but you can't see it from far, or at least from neighbouring sectors.
When you enter a WH, and maybe for 'local' jumps also, for a brief moment you cross sub-space. Like falling in a well, but leaving in the other side instead of hitting the non-existing bottom.
From Freespace universe, sometimes you get trapped longer in subspace. Just like an ion storm. And you keep allways one vector (direction of jump) but are able to move relatively to other ships and debris inside subspace. And shields does not work in subspace!
This could be applied to VO universe as a replacement to ion storms. When you are unlucky, you get trapped in subspace storm, and must proceed to its exit.
From game engine, there are N subspace sectors (SSS). Empty ones, no background, or equal a permanent ion storm. Each SSS connects between two connected WHs, and periodically change which WHs.
When you fall in a SSS, you must proceed to its exit. Or remain inside. Once reaching its exit, you leave to your original path.
Unless if exactly when you are inside there the SSS moves, so as result you will exit in a random system, where SSS moved to.
Also, shields does not work in subspace!
But no 'fixed vector' in VO. Make possible to bots, NPCs and PCs to remain inside it as long as desired.
From a practical point of view, it's like moving Ion storms from normal universe to subspace sectors between WHs (or system jumps).
(edit) Make 3 SSS permanent, floating around 2 exits, but with a 'fixed' 3rd exit connected to a special sector. Build a conquerable station there...

Alloh, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Thank whomever in charge that I followed my initial thought and went directly to Lecter's reply...
That naturally piqued my curiosity and I am now slightly dumber..... No thanks Alloh. Really, no thanks

Ion storms serve two very important functions.
1. Great ambush areas.
2. Good way to bring up weapons and combat xp.
Also, Alloh, do you see how terrible this idea is? You have Whytee and Lecter in agreement. I suggest that you turn your suggestion making skills towards Palestine and Israel. If you do, I'm sure that they will be in agreement within seconds of hearing any plans you have. Peace in the Middle East has never been closer.

"...rambling, incoherent post..."
Yeah, pretty much sums it up.
Yeah, pretty much sums it up.
wow, and i thought alloh couldn't be any dumber
The devs plan on greatly reducing the frequency of ion storms (something I disagree with, but that's another topic), as said in the latest newsletter.
Yeah I've been hearing that for at least a year.
haha, @Ryan.
Ryan wins the thread.
Devs stated they will reduce Ion Storms. Why not replace it with something similar, but more "hard" on scientific side?
From Physics side, this is simply a longer tunnel when engaging a wormhole jump.
From game engine, simply move ion storm to another sector, outside normal universe. Can be reduced or increase at will.
And from interaction side, same rules from Ion storms apply. But I feel more interesting if that 'space anomaly' happens outside normal space. More logical to explain why it does not happens in empty, stations and WH sectors. It happens during the jump instead, so does not affect normal universe!
But you must have an open mind to accept new ideas. And here, in VO forum, is not acceptable to think out of box...

One possibility is that all of the people who've replied to this thread are closed-minded and incapable of thinking outside the box.
Another possibility is that your idea was poorly thought-out, horribly written and an abomination unto everything that is good and right in the world.

I'd go with the latter vordark.

You are already dealing with a universe where faster-than-light travel is the norm and now you want to make an argument for some change in said FTL travel that would make it more scientifically relevant?
Look: just stick to the game mechanics arguments, ok?

DBZ, Wormholes crossing is NOT FTL.
your speed never exceeds c. You warp the universe, to form a tunnel from one spot to another one. And cross it slowly... at normal ship's speed.
Faster-Than-Light was in Elite and similars, you head towards destinations and accelerates with an 'special' engine, so travelling faster than c.
VO jump engines opens allways perfect holes, I'd like to see some quantic uncertainty to it, while providing an alternative to ion storms.

I see. So I can pick one up at the Radio Shack down the street?
