Of course there has to be some fantasy elements, but there should be a limit to how far that fantasy extends. That's all I am saying.

And of course You're right.
This is just a matter of proper polishment & game balance. This conception can be adjusted either way - to make it more or less fantasy.

yoda of borg just needs to think outside the box. Remeber how you suggested going to uncharted sectors in a system? Well, what if that uncharted sector happened to have a wormhole in/near it?
Btw, wormholes bend space somehow, why not make the weird particles floating around ion storms responsible for the bending of space... sort of have ion storms be "baby wormholes" which are unstable, and only .01% of them stabilize into the wormholes we know today. This instability could cause the effect Paladin has mentioned. There are endless rp explanations which fit into the current "realism" of the game.

Sure Crusader, I dont have a problem with Ion Storms sending you somewhere random, read his whole post.
It's the "my ship is able to get me back from here with no storm" idea that throws me. How exactly can the ship know where it is if it does not know where it is, and how to get back?
SirThinksALot needs to think more I think.
Like I said, I like the basis, just don't like this implementation at all. So put that in yer troll pipe and smoke it :P

Well i have a new idea which better explains things:
The "normal" wormholes are existing stabilized subspace distortions created by local concentration of exotic particles such as muons & tachyons.
A "normal" wormhole is essentially a space-time distortion of a sort, but it somehow stabilized.
So, when You enter an ion storm, You may actually encounter an UNSTABILIZED distortion (unstable almost-wormhole of a kind), which kind of SUCKS YOU IN when You try to jump and sends You somewhere.
It could be a "temporary wormhole" which only stays in place for few seconds (so theoretically few ships could enter if they travel close to each other and jump simultaneously).
The same way as You travel with wormholes, You can travel two way to an uncharted sector using such distortion. After You encounter an Ion storm, such wormhole stays alive just for few more seconds, and the one in the uncharted sector (which let's You go back to normal space) stays alive for long time, so You can do jave fun in the uncharted sector.
