Xang Xi Mass Scoop Module

The exact name is up to debate... but while on the subject of new turrets I had a neat little idea. This device could be equipped in any turret port and would require a gunner to operate it. Essentially, what it would do is temporarily increase the mass of the gunner's ship by 300,000kg for 15 seconds whenever it is activated. It recharges relatively slowly, 1 minute between each charge, and once activated it cannot be canceled until the 15 seconds is complete (this means you must use it wisely because, if used in the wrong situation, it can make you an easy single-vector target... or you could bounce right into a supernova and that would end your day real quick, now wouldn't it?).

This device would have a hell of a lot of uses, each of which requires the sacrifice of 1000kg (the regular weight of the device), a gunner with no actual gun, and a hell of a lot of communication and coordination. I'll give you some scenarios.

1) Equipped on an energy Atlas X chasing something down:

Good: The Atlas goes up to top speed, lines up with target (also going top speed) and the gunner pops his mass scoop charge. The Atlas pilot can now cut turbo while maintaining his top speed and recharging his battery... the Atlas pilot proceeds shoot prey down without the worry of energy at the high speed.

Bad: The Atlas pilot chases the target and gets to top speed, but fails to communicate to the gunner that he's ready and the gunner ends up popping the charge prematurely. This means he doesn't get a chance to line up the target well enough (although it would probably be most effective with gauss-type weapons or gat turrets... but whatever maybe he's using flares or neuts). The mass makes it difficult (but not impossible) to line up a target unless you are already turning. On top of that, the prey could catch on and break off, leaving you helplessly flying through space for 15 seconds... maybe even into an asteroid.

2) Equipped on an already semi-mass-loaded swarm-armed Moth running from some pursuers:

Good: The Moth is running at full speed, but in an instant it simultaneously cuts turbo, turns in a direction, and tell his gunner to pop his charge (we're talking a very quick moment here, he or she shouldn't lose a lot of velocity before the gunner initiates the mass scoop). The Behemoth maintains its speed and the turning motion it started just before the charge. Just as the Behemoth turns so it's roughly facing its target, it can fire off the swarms. Seeing as the swarms are missiles that always fire at a constant speed in one direction, the relative velocity of the swarms fired at speeds of say 140 m/s backwards would be 220 m/s (or more considering the other ship is probably going a bit faster). That, coupled with the fact that the missiles would not need to go in a half-circle before lining up, means that swarms fired under this condition would be very hard to dodge.

Bad: Same scenario, but the gunner makes a mistake due to miscommunication and the ship becomes an easy target for 15 seconds.

Not to mention the possibility of ramming stuff really freaking hard at top speed :D

No.

Appreciate the Han Solo ref, though.

Couldn't resist. I agree that it may be a little far fetched for now... but still... cool stuff. Might be cool to have some weapons that require a little more coordination.

Yes, that I can agree with. But I think they should not be self-nerfing like that ;)
