I like the idea of this. +1
As far as the possible exploitable aspect to it, how about we resolve it like so:
When you delete a alt you an option pops up asking you if you would like to merge data to a alt, if yes.. gives you a option of selecting which one to merge with.
Then reminds you with a "are you sure" selection of yes, or no.
If yes, then data is merged to selected alt.*
*Merging data to alt is one time shot, or only after say 3 months are you allowed to do this again. Or possibly just restrict it like for repairing faction via the Corvus mission, just that the first time is free, and after that it's 300m and then your done.
This would fix exploits. Anyways, discuss.

There are no potential exploits, and your proposal is thus needlessly restrictive. There's no reason to compromise here, though I realize that pointless, emasculating compromise is thought to be necessary 100% of the time in VO because of the vague, never articulated idea of balance.
Heh, well... guess you aren't paying much attention. Name changes are more common than you'd think.
To the extent that's true, I'd say there's some explaining in order. I think it more likely it has happened in one or two unusual circumstances and that you are, as usual, talking out of your (vigorous activity loosened) ass.

Nice try, but you're wrong Lecter. Dead wrong. I know 2 chars who have had names changed in the past 3 weeks. And those are just the ones I know.
If the Devs have gotten that loosey-goosey about it, they may as well just let anyone change any character's name at any time.
-1, just because it holds no personal appeal to me.
And, as an aside for those who don't know:
The stats of deleted characters are preserved and accessible. Likewise, renamed characters are easily connected to the original.

Define "stats" and "accessible," Maal. My first character, the original Dr. Lecter, is still "there" in some limited form - http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/stats/61631 - but would be too tricky to restore.
I thought it was pretty cool when I found out that you can get as much information from the website about a deleted character as you can about an normal one. Maybe someone who would lament the loss of a deleted character's stats would be pleased to learn that basic information about old deleted characters is still available to be looked at. Maybe. I felt like sharing just in case.

It's this crazy newfangled technology called databases: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database

No disputing any of that, Maal. I just read your post as possibly suggesting that all the info, i.e., enough for retrieval, was easily accessible.
It is fun to browse the old char IDs, though.

Okay what the fuck. You can't blow off an idea because you think it doesn't apply to you.

Swearing makes your arguments much more sophisticated, I must say.
Sure he can, Estrogen. It just means Maal was wasting his time commenting, unless the act of typing out mindless babble has some inherent value to him.

Lecter would attest to the value of amusing one's self with one's own babble.
Since I wanted to share part B, it was responsible to share part A. You guys probably forgot that the devs have some incentive for tracking the popularity of ideas as much as anything else.

Maybe when you actually get your ass back in-game, Maal, your perception of any given idea will be worth tracking.
I doubt it.
Well Maalik, you self-righteous ass, I don't see you actually suggesting a better way this could be done instead of smiting it and leaving it?
Hmm, the number of personal attacks against me have definitely gone up since I've stopped playing. Oh well.
I don't care about my own stats and thus the basic idea here doesn't appeal to me. There's nothing really to get worked up about here..

i like the original idea.
I forget who said it but somebody said that inventories shouldn't be transferred, that absolutely stupid, you can already do that without Dev help.
Peytros suggested that you could use this for massive power-leveling by creating three characters at 3/3/3. This is not true. level 3 is 7000 XP combining them gives you 21000, not far from level 5.
The only thing i would add to this, is a preview function. Have it spit out something showing you the new stats of the merged character.

Inventories can be tied indirectly to faction, especially as pertains to ships. I would prefer that inventories not be subject to transfer, as it really would make bulk transfer of stuff one could not otherwise get (at least not easily) quite simple. If there's something you want to move, move it manually. Credits aren't dep on faction and are already transfered automagically rather than as cargo.
