Secret Sectors

Back in alpha we had alot of "secret" sectors in wich the WH's needed to be navigated to via. landmakarks, point towards certain stars etc. These secret sectors offered rare commodities (if we had them now they could offer very rare commodities) and offered some very lucrative trade routes. I think this could add a very interesting twist to grey space, if we had 5-6 secret sectors that offered considerably more profit than normal routes it could encourage more trading in grey.

Also, It would be cool to see something like "weapon upgrades" at these stations. Say you could bring a moth of neut2 and for a price upgrade them to neut3's or even Lenbs. Perhaps you could upgrade normal positrons to an improved AAP or a megaposi... Perhaps pay to upgrade a sunflares ammo by 2 etc.
The better the upgrade, the steeper the price (it would have to cost a considerable amount I would think).

Oh, and bring back the S-14 station! Inside the big iceyo.. it kicked ass!

The problem with secret anything in games like these being that they don't stay secret for long. The novelty runs out quite quickly once they're discovered.

What if they were tied to something dynamic like storms? Perhaps storms could provide some sort of extra navigational "oomph" that would allow the current nav systems to aquire coordinates to said sectors.

That said, I guess if it was sufficiently difficult to locate the wh, it would probably outlast the attention span of a large portion of players.

I think that tying these to ion storms is a good idea. Storms have no purpose as of yet, other than to annoy traders, so it would solve two problems.

To tie them to a storm, the sector can only be revealed when in a storm. The sector will show as a button, perhaps labeled 'Jump to (Current System) P-17.' The only sector(s) revealed would be the secret sector(s) for the system you are in. The button would disappear from the map whenever not in the secret sector or ion storm.

You could manage the upgrades by making a mission require a certain amount of equipment and the weapon you wanted upgraded, in addition to deducting credits. Something like a Corvus Widowmaker mission.

Kind of defeats the whole "secret" sector aspect doesn't it? I prefer the way it was, all those millions of years ago... for example, line up with the last ice roid in the belt, strafe left 137m, strafe up 305m and fl through the center of the three roids 1700m dead ahead.

Back to wormholes appearing in random storms perhaps?

I like the idea of using them sometimes in storms, perhaps once and a while you could access these areas through storms.

Another idea, is that the way to get to these sectors could change once a month or something, or they could be dynamic in a way where there are 3 or 4 different access points but only one would work at any given time that way people would still have to fly around a bit even if they knew where all the access points were.

i like the dynamic idea... say when certain 'roids in a sector line up in a particular way, a gravitational anomaly opens up a temporary WH to an otherwise unaccessable sector. WH need not show up on the hud.. travel x distance in a straight line from the 'roids and suddenly the dialogue to press activate to use the wh to wherever appears

yep, thats what I was thinking. And it is also how it worked back in the Alpha days, the dialogue would just come up saying hit enter to use WH..

Hmm... why instead of SECRET Sectors, don't we thing of RANDOM sectors? Like, they appear inside X% of ion storms just like a wormhole, so your radar shows regular "+" exit and another *.

Even better, make that those sectors/systems to allways have 2 connections to "regular" universe, but always changing its location. Every (timeslice) the entry or leave point change what storm is it connected to!

And lead to rich sectors, but without any permanent stations. Maybe a small conquerable station and a few rogue capships. Makes more sense RP-wise.

Already proposed, I know, but this way seems more interesting. It is a permanent area with floating connections. Random instead of Secret...

Random idea: unstable wormholes?
Let's introduce wormholes that can only be opened in a group or with special equipment, plus the passage causes some random damage to every ship including possible (say 10-20% percent chance) destruction. I think that would be neat for some long-distance shortcuts.
