Mission-Based Faction System Idea:
Personally, I would like to see a more in-depth system where everyone starts out unaligned. The faction that they choose in the player creation menu would only dictate where they start out and how much faction they start out with (I.E. an unaligned Serco would be in the high hated levels with the Itani and the low respected levels with Serco, visa-versa with unaligned Itani, and unaligned UIT would start with respected with all the UIT-overseen corporations) and unaligned players would have certain faction level limits (most likely just respected across the board except for minor factions - excluding corvus which would still have a limit of respected).
Unaligned pilots can then choose to take mission trees to obtain full citizenship with a nation if they are respected with them (Unaligned pilots just coming out of training would be prompted right away for this mission for their starting nation, they could refuse of course). Citizens would essentially have a locked faction standing with Itani if they're Serco and Serco if they're Itani (KoS) and they lose the citizenship if they become hated with their own nation.
They can also take the mission tree for UIT and basically all of the faction limits would be the same as normal unaligned except they can get PoS with UIT and faction higher than +700 with all of the UIT-overseen corporations. Corvus would be capped at disliked, but it would still be possible to dock. They'll just charge you a fortune for repairs.
People can also take a mission tree for Corvus (or, in the near future, pirate clans!). This would act the same as all the other mission trees except they would retain the "Unaligned" tag (this gives the neat side effect of not knowing whether someone is a pirate or not from a quick glance >_>). Serco and Itani would still be capped at respected, Corvus will be capped at PoS, XX will be able to go above +700, and UIT would be capped at disliked. And, of course, due to the nature of not being able to lose faction with Corvus: once you become a pirate there's no turning back ^_^ (actually there will probably be a mission somewhere to defect).
That is... unless the devs have an even more in-depth faction system than this in the workings. Maybe the players can get behind this idea and make it easier to implement by making some mission trees for joining nations (using achievements instead of factions, of course...).

I like this... there is however a way to lose faction with Corvus.
Aye, whatever, there should always be some way to defect...
I like this idea. A lot, actually. However, I think this is more of a long-term goal.. and in the short term I really want my idea implemented :p.
But seriously, damned good thinking.
