Name: MKIV
Variant: Mining
Faction: Valent
Level: 5/1/6/-/6
Armor: 12000 7000 less than MKIII
Cargo: 24 8 more than MKIII
Weapons: 3L, built in mineral scanner
Mass: 18000kg 2000kg more than MKIII
Thrust: 380 N 45 N less than MKIII, same as MKI
Turbo Thrust: 480 N 70 N less than MKIII
Max Speed: 65m/s
Spin Torque 8.5 Nm 1.5 Nm less than MKIII, same as MKI
Turbo Speed: 200m/s
Turbo Speed: 50m/s

A slow and laborious ship meant specifically for strip mining. Best if used to mine in pairs, with the Mining Rag mining/jettisoning minerals while another ship picks up the new minerals in a more cargo-capable ship.

Low armor, max speed, and thrust combined with high mass means this ship is not a huge PvP threat.

Strip mining is evil
Hort.

But yeah, sounds okay

Hmm, 3 Light is a bit slow, 2 HD makes a big difference.

Honestly, a lot depends on how the devs eventually decide to revamp the mineral distribution in the universe. That is a long way down the road, there are many more pressing issues in VO .

Serious miners do not need a scanner, we just know where the good roids are. Players mining for xp can just use a normal rag, anyone chasing the basic miner ribbon is going to be in a basic or mining moth.

Long term I would like to see very small deposits of very rare ores, perhaps in sectors with nasty hive bots. If that happened then adding a built in scanner to the tung mineral maud would be a better option.

So I would consider it to be a not an unreasonable suggestion, but not one with a high priority at this stage of the game.

I'm not sure what you meant by this statement. If you interpreted 3L -> 3 Light (anyways, 3 Light what??)... I meant for 3L -> 3 Large Ports.

And yes, this ship suggestion is not meant as pressing (though if it's liked I see no reason to keep it out of the game), but rather as something that would be nice to have, and IMO would possibly make mining more appealing to some (and the more things to encourage group activity, the better).

As for mining for ores under heavy fire, I agree with the tung maud mod idea.

Hmm, 3 large would be interesting. I can see the advantage of a ship to encourage group activity, a couple of miners and an xc to haul stuff.

Ok, if it is not a lot of effort, go for it .

3L ports is interesting. All it would be good for in PvP is just a large swarm platform. I dont see a problem with it.

Well I guess you could put three AGT's on it. three swarm launchers would also be nice for shield busting till they come up with something better.

As long as the Devs have Eckas permission to put it in game.

Actually, its a great idea. Enough people use the Rag for mining anyways, may as well get a mining Rag variant in there. I don't really think it needs a turbo speed of 200m/s though, but thats just an opinion.

I think a 3L port taur would be better because of the 48 cargo space.

I was purposefully limiting cargo space to encourage teamwork. Also, taurs are generally less... cumbersome (which this ship should be).

Yeah, can you imagine a douchetaur with 3 Lports? Would be an absolute bastard to fight.

2 gems>1 swarm so I don't see a bombing impact from this. It might be good for energy bombing, 3 megaposis.
Feb 22, 2010 Resistance37 link
Energy bombing?

Like the idea, although because this could be deadly in some combat situations, and since it is a mining ship, I suggest lowering the armor a bit more.

As missioncreek2, I still prefer the CENTAUR with 3L ports+integrated scanner... that is already a cargo ship, and already the best miner for those who does not have BM2 yet like me...

I don't see the rag as a cargo ship, as I hate the miner hog. My brain keeps saying that miner hog should be a looooong or FAT ship, since space compression is not possible - but used in VO.
Feb 22, 2010 Aticephyr link
Alloh, I'd bet that everyone here would prefer to mine in a 3L port taur. However, such a taur would probably be very, very damned hard to balance to a point where the 3L ports wouldn't be an insane threat in PvP.

Moreover, this rag is not meant to be a cargo ship at all (as said in the OP). It is meant to strip mine. It would be another ship's duty to collect the cargo.

As for those who are talking about this ship as a potential bomber... try to use a fully-loaded Rag MKI as a bomber while holding 2000kg of cargo, all the while keeping in mind that you would have 4000 less armor in the Rag MKIV. I highly doubt a setup that cumbersome needs further nerfing (though I'll submit to public opinion if it swings the other way).

"2 gems>1 swarm so I don't see a bombing impact from this.."

Only in total damage, but the swarms are launched in impressive volleys.

Also with three swarm launchers you could chain fire them to have a continuous stream of missiles.

Still, swarms aren't hard to dodge, in a gauss vulture you can barrel roll around them, do about 3/4 rotation one way then a bit of strafe and rotate the other way looks like this kinda C__O

pfft, if you need to do it, upgrade the mining moth to a three-L port ship. Who needs the small port?
Feb 22, 2010 Dr. Lecter link
The whole point of the mining moth is its ability to mount a scanner. If you're going to give it a buff - something I support, given its high cost, tissue paper armor, low speed, and absomotherfuckinglutly insane level requirement - give in an integrated Adv Scanner and then make the 3rd port an L-port.

If you insist:)

Well I just meant bombing cappies and stationary defenses and such.
