Ship Descriptions

Feb 19, 2010 vIsitor link
Well, as long as the current craze of "low-hanging fruit" suggestions keeps piling up, I figure I might as well contribute to the mess.

One longstanding issue I've had is the in-game descriptions for ships in the purchase window. Most descriptions are somewhat spartan, while others (notably those of the Hornet, Centaur, and Ragnarok) are missing entirely.

The descriptions of the EC, Centurion, and Vulture seem to have been crafted with a fair amount of attention and care; they're a good base-line for what I'd like to see in general. Of course, I'd also like different descriptions for every single variant, but that would probably be overkill (at least right now).

This stuff isn't terribly important, I'll grant, but I'd like to see it done anyway.

That fruit is on the ground....

OP: Write your own descriptions of each ship, and post them here. That way you can pick the fruit up and hand it to the devs instead of asking them to pluck it at all.

pa, its not just on the ground, its grown into new trees so long ago that they've evolved into different trees.

...which bear a new type of fruit that Inc mistook for a sleeping bat.

In the past week, I've spent some time taking ladron up on his suggestion and wrote up a few possible descriptions. Mind you, there are a lot of subpar (or outright missing) descriptions beyond the ones the following three replace, but, thus far, these are the only ones I've written that meet my own standards. And even then, I'm not entirely convinced I wrote them in the proper tone...

==HORNET==

The Hornet heavy attack fighter is famous for its standard mounting of a staggering four small equipment ports--unprecedented as of its unveiling and as of yet unsurpassed by any ship of similar size--and notorious for its poor maneuverability. Widely regarded as the clumsiest fighter around, it seldom wins any dogfights with its lighter, nimbler cousins, while the absence of a large addon port precludes it from use as a proper bomber. Although typically unpopular with solo pilots, it is occasionally known to be used for group fire-support or in a railgun-laden "sniper" configuration. Orion Heavy Manufacturing is the largest user of these craft, and retains manufacturing rights for its own in-house variant. Unimaginatively named the Convoy Guardian, its designers did their utmost to iron out the Hornet's longstanding shortcomings, with debatable success.

==REVENANT==

The Revenant is a multi-role vessel introduced by TPG to replace the popular but aging Wraith design of Itani origin. Capable of performing all of the old roles as light transport, general purpose mining craft, and even impromptu assault platform with remarkably similar performance as its predecessor, and at much lower cost, it has widely supplanted the Wraith, which has since been widely discontinued from use outside of select circles. Axia Technology Corporation, who had a vested interest in keeping the Wraith line running, being the Wraith's primary manufacturer prior to the abandonment of the design, have not been happy with this change, to say the least.

==WRAITH (Axia Guardian Variant)==

When the Itani first began trading with the UIT corporations, Axia Technology Corporation became enthralled by an obscure Itani utility craft which would eventually become the core of the Wraith ship chassis. The so called 'love affair' between the design and Axia's engineers was well-known, as is the extent of Axia's fury when TPG finally one-upped them by introducing the competing Revenant design, leaving Axia the largest manufacturer of a ship almost no one was willing to buy. Although the standard Wraith assembly lines have since been retooled or scrapped, Axia continues to manufacture their proprietary Guardian Wraith variant, for which TPG's newfangled Revenant has no equivalent, mostly out of spite.

Also related, despite indirectly:

instead of "Sanctioned personnel only", the 'special' itens should bring also a more informative text, like:

-Requires Badge_X
-Requires higher local standing

Alloh stop trying to hijack threads.

vIsitor: Those are a good start. Maybe we'll see fewer idiot noobs flying around in hornets if we make it clear in the description that they suck :D

Got one more. I attempted to write some others, but I seem to have been afflicted with a severe case of writer's block this week. Perhaps I'll have more by next Friday...

==ATLAS==

When it was first introduced, the Atlas light freighter was regarded as TPG's most intuitive product. Overall more capable than than the common Wraith swift currier of the day, and generally considered more survivable than the slower Centaur heavy transport, its only real competition was the Marauder utility transport, to which access was generally restricted. It quickly became TPG's best-seller, and the undisputed backbone of the UIT corporate trading fleets. Since the introduction of the Behemoth bulk transport, however, it has begun to fall out of favor. However, even as it becomes less common it the core systems, it has remained in common use amongst the seedier regions of the galaxy where taking the notoriously clumsy Behemoth would be inadvisable.

OK, I think I've let this lay fallow long enough. Time to gravedig a bit and add another two descriptions. (Feedback would be swell, guys, by the way).

===RAGNAROK===

Implicitly designed to breach the defensive shielding of capital craft, the Ragnarok heavy bomber is over-gunned in the extreme. However, like the Hornet, it sacrifices a great deal of performance in other areas to attain its level of potential firepower. While it excels at its intended role, it has all the grace of a beached whale, and is universally reviled as a 'flying coffin' by professional dogfighters. For this unpopularity, it remains one of the few craft without any third-party design variants, although its necessity in the modern battlefield means that it remains, begrudgingly, in common use.

===CENTAUR===

In the days before the Behemoth, the Centaur was the go-to craft if you needed more cargo capacity than an Atlas, but did not have the clearance to obtain a UIT Marauder. Like other vessels, it was originally an Itani design which came into common use, although, uncharacteristically, its sleek design curvature, typical in Itani craft, belies its clumsy nature. Its evaded retirement thanks in no small part due to capacity to equip a respectable armament, which has allowed it to serve in a wide variety of roles. Perhaps owing to the Centaur's flexibility and their proximity to the craft's nation of origin, Tunguska Heavy Mining Concern utilizes its own proprietary "Aggresso" variant extensively, both in their convoys and in their main security forces.
