"Sweeping" animation for the radar when radar/storm extender is equipped

Another low priority suggestion (full of em turns out), but this one had me stumped for a bit. I couldn't figure out how come the wireframe effect kept coming and going while I had a storm extender equipped.

Turns out the device works in a sweeping pattern (who knew? Apparently not me...). While this becomes clear after a few minutes, it would be cool to see some visual indicator on the radar.

Edit: Wait a sec. Why the hell does it work in a sweeping pattern when none of the other radar does?

Edit2: It's actually a cool effect. I guess one could rationalize it as an addon produced by a different manufacturer. Either way, could it maybe be sped up? As it is right now it's a bit slow for any sort of intense combat/navigation.

The sweeping animation was suggested a while ago in an off-hand comment by some noob, and for some reason it was implemented. Unfortunately I don't remember which thread it was in, so I can't link you to it. It's incredibly annoying and adds no gameplay value. It should either be removed or modified to progress about 40 times as quickly as it does now

The sweeping pattern was not suggested by some noob, or if it was, it had no bearing on anything. I had planned it for a long time, due to a dislike of the prior radar extension; and I had considered it well before we ever implemented any extension. It can still be modified, the speed of fadeout after the sweep, and the like, but it will probably stay around in some form.

It does have a gameplay impact, as is stated by the first post "it's a bit slow for any sort of intense combat/navigation.". Whether or not a limitation on sensor data is of "value" is in the eye of the beholder. Different extenders could sweep at different rates. Some extenders could have configurable sweep rates, an increased rate could also increase the distance at which the (sweeping) ship could be detected, adding an element of risk to improved sensor data. Etc.

Making everyone's ship drift at 15 m/s to the left at all times unless they manually compensated would have exactly the same kind of gameplay impact.

Like I said, my original post had more to do with the first impression of the effect, that being that it feels buggy, until you figure out what is going on.

I'm somewhat ambivalent towards the gameplay value; I can see where you're coming from though Inc. And I guess making every piece of equipment ideal doesn't do much for diversity.

I don't see why it can't be wireframe the whole time. You would expect that's how it would be considering how far in the future this is.

I still hadn't figured out what this was until this thread. I just thought the extender effect sucked.

In real life the fade is selected so the target is still barely visible when the next sweep occurs.

I believe allowing players to turn the effect off would make a few happy....Personally I like the effect

It would be turned off for gameplay advantages. Radar sweeps also make mines and missiles visible.
