Large containers of cargo have a longer time-out timer.

Yes.

so 120cu of adv rails takes 30 minutes to time out, while 1cu of scrap metal could take 15 or even ten.

(Yes, inspired by Dr. Lecter's saddening tale)

How about make them all 45 minutes regardless of size.

The devs are worried about bot sectors, I think. Personally, what I'd like to see is have some sort of cargo container marking tool that, once a cargo container is "marked" (targeted, button pressed), it would both show up at an extended radar range like a group member until it is picked up and increase that cargo container's timeout length by 20 minutes or so. It would be useful in not only ion storm/general piracy but also hive skirmishes where if player were to shoot some bot and it drops a nice piece of equipment he/she could target that cargo, mark it, and move on so he/she could pick it up when the hive skirmish ends.

Graphically, my idea for a way to identify marked cargo is to remove the strobe light effect from normal cargo and save it for marked cargo. In the case that someone decides to use some aquean ore as a buoy: anyone can mark a piece of cargo for themselves even if it is already marked by someone else or their group, but that person would have to close to a range of 10m to unmark it. It would also cancel the marking if the cargo is picked up, but that's just in case someone's flying a vulture and a power cell is being used as a buoy or something.

That's just my little idea, good way to kill two [three] bird with one stone

Drop a (planned) nav buoy near it.

Even better would be option to "aim" on a cargo and attach a buoy to it, so this cargo crate lasts as long as buoy lasts, with limited supply of buoys per pilot.

30 minutes... are you nuts?

What's the problem, Pa? It's not like there are all that many drops of, say, 100cu or larger. Some things do glom together, so I'd say scrap and ore should be excluded from this behavior.
