New device: Scan sensor

This addon basically tells you if you have been scanned by a cargo scanner or some such. Ideas?

I think this information should appear on the HUD without a new device. I don't think the knowledge of being scanned is worth carrying a device (as in most cases you'll find out soon enough that someone scanned you)... but the warning that you've been scanned increases RP fun.

Makes sense; a ship should have built-in sensors already that would pick up frequencies.

Its an interesting idea but I don't find it particularly useful. The reason being if I jump into a sector and there are pirates or they jump in after me, I don't care if they scan me... I care about getting where I'm going.

On the off chance that I for some reason believe my fully loaded moth stands a chance of fighting off an attacker, I believe I'd rather have the weapon this add on would replace. However, if this was something ships did without an add on... then I don't see any problems with it.

Yeah, it probably is something ships should do without an add-on.

On a somewhat related note, ships should also be able to determine if they're being targeted by another ship. Again, this is just nice mostly for RP reasons.

+1... though I could imagine such a warning being very annoying in NW (aka you should be able to turn it off). Otherwise, damned useful.

Well, it shouldn't really be obnoxious. A simple text notification near your target information or under the distance indicator on the HUD would be sufficient. An option to get rid of it wouldn't be a bad thing, anyway.

I have something to add. In Freespace 2, if you are being targeted, a second hollow direction indicator told you which way you should turn to face the ship targeting you. Maybe something like that?

That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, ingoguy. As it stands I don't think I've actually looked at the existing direction indicator in the last 4 months though, so I'm not sure how useful it would be.
