Black Hole
I figured out what VO is missing. There needs to be a big black hole in some system just for the visuals. Not having any effect on game play but just to look interesting. we've got nebulas and stars and planets everywhere. Maybe one system, perhaps in grey space somewhere the sun in the system could die and collapse into a black hole with I nice big accretion disk with the jets coming out of it's rotational poles. The asteroid fields in the system could be configured like spiral arms at the outer edge of the accretion disk as if they will eventually fall in as well.
currently the direction of the lighting that hits the asteroids is based on the relative location of the sun in the system. In a system with a black hole we could just assume this light is coming from the accretion disk.

/me votes for more features, not still graphics.
Uh, what in all bleeding hell would this add to the game?
Not having any effect on game
Oh. Righto.
Clearly this needs to be moved to "The Drunk Thread" in the Off-topic forum.

Black holes have been suggested, but having effect on gameplay. If gravitational anomalies were to be implemented, I'd prefer them to actually do something, instead of only looking nice.
A black hole would have the same gravitational effect as a sun of the same mass. Black hole sectors would act the same as sun sectors.
I was always a fan of the darker sectors, I think it would be badass to have a sector with a black hole instead of a sun. Except I wouldn't make it as pretty, just a spot on the nav map that blocks out the star background behind it and a spot with no stars behind it instead of a sun in the in-game background as well. I'd mainly be interested in this because the system would have almost no light, though.
Right, agreed that a system that looks more like deep space with really low lighting would be totally awesome... but gameplay before aesthetics. This is one for whatever the next in line is after Soon(tm).

Did a quick google image search and found this image which fairly closely matches what I was imagining in my head for a systems background image.

nice image PolarBear! i'd love to see it somewhere in the game..
P.S. i set it up as desktop background for a couple of days )

I think this is what you're looking for:
ChangeBackground@here or ChangeBackground@vo-wiki
BUT...
It points to http://coalitionofitan.com/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get15 that is NOT working for non-members...
If I understood what you wish, simply get a higher resolution image of that, or "insert" it into one now used BG and done!

PolarBear: I think you will find that that picture is either a star first forming or a quasar. Generally black holes look sort of like this
Alloh: If you read the description of that plugin, you might notice that it says that the plugin is for the purposes of changing the background in your current sector to the background of any other sector, not an arbitrary image.
As far as replacing the image of the background for some arbitrary sector with your own goes, you're shit out of luck there too, since such images do not actually exist. The backgrounds are generated on the fly. That's why each sectors can have its own unique background with spinning planets and the like.

A quasar is a galaxy with a supermassive black hole at it's core that is feeding on an abundance of nearby matter.
newly forming stars generally form inside nebulas often referred to as stellar nurseries and usually completely obscured by dust until stellar wind blows out empty pockets in the nebular surrounding the new star.
I should also point out that this is not a hubble photo but an artists rendering that happens to look somewhat cool. Could be better though.
Actual photos of black holes from hubble are not very dramatic or interesting, for our purposes it will need to be just that, an artists rendering. Otherwise it wouldn't really be worth adding.
btw Genka, your link didn't actually link to an image. Just a page about the milkyway's gallactic core

That one is also kind of cool. I like the way they applied the doppler effect to the jets with the farther one red shifted and the nearer blue shifted.
Again this is a portrayal of a feeding black hole. A black hole that isn't feeding is just not at all interesting to look at. About the only visual evidence of a non feeding black hole is gravitational lensing.

Here's a hubble photo of galaxy M87 in the middle of the Virgo cluster and the 5,000 light year long jet from the 2 billion solar mass black hole at it's core.
Impressive in a way but not at all right for the game.

hhmmmmm... far out dreaming post
That would be really cool to add some exotic deep space objects on Vendetta's backgrounds... and more visible, detailled, when using zoom.
Those extra-gallactic and other galaxies appear on most systems, serving as a basic reference for relative distance-postion to other systems...
For the galaxies, we could use/insert the hubble pictures itself, since Andromeda has almost the same visual from anywhere in our milky way; Sattelite galaxies as LMC/SMC would differ.

eye candy is good for the eyes.
i like this.
i like this.
I just love black holes. They've always been my favorite things out in space. I think of them as the univers' ultimate predator. Total top of the food chain. They devour absolutely everything in reach, the more they eat the hungrier they get and nothing that penetrates the event horizon ever ever escapes.
"eye candy is good for the eyes."
It is also good for VO, eye candy... or anything visually stimulating is good, it gives a sense that there are things out there for the player. This would add to the over all feeling of adventure and exploration of VO.
Granted it doesn't add anything really tangible to game play, but it doesn't detract from game play either and it does add a bit of visual stimulation, so why not?
(Assuming it wouldn't be very time consuming.)

Maybe some cosmic event opens new wormholes, to new sectors with all sort of new things...
HEADLINES:
* Scientists at station X detected today what seems to be a forming wormhole.
* Confirmed new wormhole, location kept secret until initial exploration is done and property rectified by existing powers.
* Nations agree new system to be gray to avoid another conflict
* New wormhole related to nearby supernova. Binary system now contains a black hole with accretion disk.
* First impressions from other side (new system):
-Near to supernova, black hole's accretion disk clearly visible
-Most sectors are fog, radioactive, or dark, or permanent ion storm due SN proximity
-Nearby supernova remains (globular nebula) is expanding towards it
-Rare / exotic / new ores found in abundance
* Request for miners/haulers/workers for the new stations to be built on new system. Nations will offer rental stations there to (guilds, person)
-Some deep space objects relates to ancient earth visible ones, Scientists hopes to determine Sol I position soon.
(unreachable but general direction determined, raises hopes to regain contact with original mankind).
so this system's BG can contain all exotic deep space objects without me.
Since this topic is free dreaming:
Maybe a progreesive expansion instead of a major redux?

This is the suggestions forum right? given the number of devs and the time it takes to implement stuff pretty much every topic is free dreaming. Player owned cap ships? Yeah that'll happen. pfft

For now it's only a dream, but you never know what devs can implement in gameplay as NewYear's gift ))
P.S. Btw, Alloh, to make italic or bold text, use i or b in square brackets in the start of text and /i or /b in square brackets at the end of text you want to make bold or italic..
