Re-implement bounty system

Nothing fancy, nothing time consuming. Just put them back exactly the way they were.

If you've got some sort of wildly inconsistent hard-on about people racking up credits by "farming" bounties (but not escorts) -- and I note that bounty farming is an exponetially smaller money bug than escorts, and actually requires far more work -- feel free to cap the bounty level at 5 million credits.

That's all. There's nothing to discuss, and this is not a suggestion so much as it's a request. You should just do it, but if you don't, then you don't.

have you taken an escort recently? it is very rare to get one over 1 mil let alone 5 mil. and escorts take anywhere from 3~20 minuets and you want to add something that will net you 5 mil every few minuets? I do not fallow that "Bounties are less exploity than the escorts right now",because as well as the previous point the bounty system you descried tells you how much you will get for each fight which is not the case with escorts. so, if there is a Re-implementation of the bounty system the cap would need to be near 200k~400k rather than the 5mil. you mentioned. A better solution might be to let players put bounties on each other so the money is coming from the player-base rather than the engine.

You've obviously never seen the bounty system in action Lama. It takes weeks just to GET a bounty put on your head and requires killing bots and players within Nation Space so that nation puts a bounty on your head. THEN you have to be a registered bounty hunter of that nation, a status granted by the Marshal at the capital station, before you can attempt to collect a bounty. THEN you have to hunt that bountied player across the Universe attempting to collect it. I remember chasing Lecter for HOURS trying to collect a bounty with 4 other players and not succeeding.

Escorts on the other hand are 0 risk big money farming with little or no effort.

What. The. Fuck. are you smoking?

Were you just not around for bounties?

I think we've spoiled our player base. We really need to fix these escorts. Let's make escorts pay a wage with a formula that looks like this:

a = # of nation space wormholes the convoy goes through
b = # of ion storms the convoy goes through
c = # of grey space wormholes the convoy goes through
x = the amount of cargo (cu) the convoy starts out with
y = the amount of cargo (cu) the convoy docks with

(5,000a+10,000c+15,000b)*(3y/2x)

Look good?

Edit: Oh yeah, and hell yeah bring back bounties! Should I be posting this in a different thread?

yes! Bounties are dearly missed!

Now that bounty was a little better explained for newbies like me, I start to like it.

Who declares the bounty, when? What conditions?

But 5mil for killing someone who will immediatly respawn and resume his "career" seems way too much money for little results.

ShankTank, definitly worth another topic. I would add that a fair fixed priced + bonus for kills and assists sounds better than the almost random convoy reward. Your formula seems a good start, but I'd change ion storms for attacks defended.

Oh I thought this meant the incremental bounties from the old days

Those should be reimplemented, along with the scores!

This is an extreme understatement. I routinely get funny looks from other players because when they see me I am flying a small fighter-class ship rather than riding a connie.

If you're killed by a bounty hunter I think you got a small license level hit, Alloh. In other words, if you're crated by a monster on your closet then you lose your candies.

I'll start a new thread on escort system reform and repost that formula there.
Jan 11, 2010 Impavid link
That's correct, I think it was a 10% hit or something. The economic rewards for bounty hunters started fairly small as well, only increasing to high levels after a player had had several successive bounties placed on his head.
Jan 11, 2010 ladron link
It was a 1% reduction. 10% would be way too much.
Jan 11, 2010 Impavid link
Yeah that makes more sense. I remember losing a license level once because of a bounty :D It was awesome.

I pledge my support for this idea, FWIW.

I never considered the bounty system an exploit to be 100% honest. I *did* sell a few bounties, but as people have said, I took an XP hit (1% can be a lot at level 9/10 combat). Bounty cracks, now that was an exploit, but that was fixed with the bot crack fix. Also farming SF's at station sectors with lmines has also been fixed.

I can't quite remember the formula for bounties, even though I did once work it out, but just so those who were not about for the bounties know, it went something like this:-

1st bounty is posted on a head for killing _lots_ of admired things in monitored space. When I say lots I mean it, literally <> 200 admired NPC's or players have to die. The bounty is placed by the (sub)faction(s) that monitor that space. Once a bounty is placed, any registered bounty hunter can claim it, no matter what faction they are registered with, by simply tracking down and killing the wanted person. 1st bounty is usually <> 200k, and more than one bounty can be posted on a head by differing (sub)factions, but 1st bounty by any will start at <> 200k.

Tracking can be done many ways, but the simplest way is to group with a few people, and designate one as bounty bitch, the bitch sits at a capitol station, asking the marshal (yes, they had a function) where the bountied person is and reporting to the group. Marshal updates can be slow, specially if the person is in grey/unmonitored space, but once they goto a station etc, ping.

Adding to bounty is simple, once you have a bounty, shoot more things in monitored space (risky as marshals can see you) <> 1k increase per kill (if memory serves correct, more for players with higher standing). So yeah, it can take AGES to even get a 1 million c bounty on your head. I put A LOT of work into getting my 13 million c bounty, and I'm talking over a year.

After a bounty is claimed, you get paid, target loses 1% XP, and now is free from the grassing marshal, and is free to start killing things in monitored space again. The last bounty figure is remembered, so the next placed bounty will be higher. Takes quite a few kills again for the next bounty to trigger, if the last triggered at 200k, next will trigger at 400k (memory is a bit foggy on this, might have been sooner, maybe 300k) so again, its a lot of work to trigger the next bounty. IIRC there was a timer on next bounty placed also (24h, 1 week? I don't recall) so with the current (and past) player base, no way can this be exploited any worse than escorts, or even a lucrative in-system swarm route in Odia.

The reason I think bounties were removed is the fact that when one is claimed, it auto-posts to station news. That made us long term players wanna only get capped by people we knew. I know when I had a large bounty (I consider large to be + 1 mill) I challenged people I knew to try claim it. But I had fun at the same time, and I'm sure my victims did too. Sometimes I would be on fire, and it would take 20 to 30 fights before one was claimed, sometimes I sucked (just like I do now) and it would be claimed with hardly any effort, but it was always fun!

Did I just write an essay in suggestions? Fucking hell, bring bounties back! The only reason they were removed was for a silly reason! Back when they were removed you could make millions each day running lux good in odia to odia ffs! So don't give me exploit, it was a fun generating machine, and now you new players can see what the system was, I'm sure you want it back too!

(I'm posting this in vein cos i've posted this 100's of times, even with suggestions to make it less (like lecters 5 mill cap, or reset to 0 on claim).

Fallin on deaf ears unless you put waylon in the title or summink :/
