Loot and item variation.

Simple idea.

Have NPCs drop (rarely) and stations sell (expensively) augmented/altered versions of standard weapons. The easiest way to do this and still make it recognisable at a glance is the tried and tested prefix system, where certain words mean predetermined stat alteration to the basic item.

For instance, where energy weapons are concerned;

Overcharged- +10% fire rate, damage. +30% energy consumption.
Efficient- -30% energy consumption. -10% shot speed.
Automated- Boosted autoaim, but increased powergrid.
Accelerated- +10% shot speed. +30% energy consumption, -20% fire rate.

The best part is that it wouldn't have to be particularly balanced, just interesting- because each station would stock random items of this type, and the cost would be high enough to make the whole thing a decent money sink.

You and I both know that that isn't possible unless the economy is fixed and all bank accounts are re-zeroed.

Ladron, a bit bitter there? Moving on...

I like the idea. A lot actually. Now, if only we could make these weps with material found/mined... but for now, [stamp of approval]. The wep mods seem balanced enough that balance wouldn't be a serious issue.

Quick! I need an Overcharged Queen's Posi of Haste!

I don't think Retractile ever even alluded to incredibly retarded variations such as that. I'm pretty sure the variations would only be of stock weapons (which would exclude faction-specific guns such as AAP and Raven).

WTB Efficient Law Enforcement Neutron Blaster, Neut3, or Neut2...

Aye! I like this idea... but they should only be sold at capital stations (to increase the weapon hauling business) and they should regularly (and only) drop from capital ships to give them some value as opposed to the convoys of 3 Behemoth Heavies any one of us pirates can reduce to scrap singlehandedly in a single sector with a vulture mk1 with a free cell and dual gov cannons.

an LENB isn't a stock wep...

Yarr, a pirate can't dream?

I figured pirates slept with one eye open to spot a passing trader, which I in turn figured would impede the process of dreaming. Guess I was wrong :-P.

One problem, though: Accelerated Axia Accelerated Positron Blaster?

Edit: I thought of a way to make this cleaner: Add "upgrade slots" to energy weapons and then make the upgrades drop from capital ships and be really expensive at capital stations. Then instead of hoping for something specific like Efficient Neutron Blaster MKII and getting a Connie-load of Efficient Government Issue Plasma Cannons in its place you could get a Connie-load of Efficiency Upgrades and upgrade your existing Neut2s. It would also fix the problem of Accelerated Axia Accelerated Positron Blasters if it were made into a stat for weapons.

Hi UncleDave! Login and lets fight!

Oh, and excellent idea. Yes.

Already solved:

Aww Hell, let's just stick Godly Plate of the Whale and Heavenly King's Sword of Haste onto our ships and play Diablo In Spaaaaaace!
Nov 16, 2009 peytros link
omg you know what we could do after we modify these stock weapons we could give them designations like mkI mkII and mkIII hell we could even make some super rare ones that are only bot drops! this is in no way shape or form anyway like what we have in game now!
Nov 16, 2009 ladron link
Actually peytros they aren't even remotely similar. As you can clearly see, the weapon variations currently in-game are differentiated primarily by suffixes and company names, while these proposed new variants will be differentiated by retarded fantasy-game style honorifics.
Nov 17, 2009 Aticephyr link
You people have no imagination. mkI's tend to be useless in comparisons with mkII's, etc.

What is being suggested here are variants that are not necessarily better or worse than their counterparts, depending on your flying style. Such mods would bring more variation to the game without too much dev time (I suspect), and without unbalancing anything. To me, it sounds like a win-win. I don't get where the issue is here.

Yes to this idea.

Also, hey Dave.
