Have NPC's emit distress calls to chat when being attacked...
...either Sector, System, or Nation, or all three. Maybe depending on the severity of the issue.
Couple reasons why this would be neat:
1. Immersion for those attacking. It would be nice to get the feeling that your target isn't just a mindless drone.
2. Immersion for those in the area. Would provide a greater sense of space, danger, etc...
3. Would give Nation Chat a reason to exist. It might even boost it's usage a bit...

Just as soon as we get the following implemented: bring back the Corvus NPC pirates and have them report over a new, Corvus aligned channel when PC traders are observed passing through Grey Space.
I like both ideas. It would add a lot of immersion to the game. Stamp of Do It Now, Dammit.
Agreed.

Ok, though perhaps to a distress channel or channels rather than general channels since the number of npcs being attacked by hive in ion storms might be quite high.
just have them do it over system chat
Not nation channel.
Perhaps a designated channel per faction.
I think 201 and 202 are ctc. so perhaps 301 and up for trader channels. 300 can be the unaligned channel. 399 can be the hive channel, which is mostly binary garbage, except that system/sector are decipherable.
edit: and not system chat, because not everyone will want to hear it. system chat doesn't have channels and might be too hard to filter out.

system chat. If a NPC falls in the void, and no one is in the system, it should not make a sound.
System chat seems fair. It would up the RP chatter without spamming the other more commonly used channels.
And Lecter I would assume that if they were to implement this, it would be an underlying functionality that would allow them to do all sorts of cool NPC chatter scenarios. The pirate channel would be mint, although, we really need encrypted channels.

I would like the targets to scream in terror when being attacked, beg for mercy, (maybe even PAY) and if necessary, die while sputtering obscenities over sector chat.
Is that too much to ask? It would increase my enjoyment of the game immensely, as long as the conversations were relatively unique and interesting.

you mean like when you kill a newb leber?
Snax, you'd only need a channel hopping plugin (and a way to safely distribute the keys, but that sort of goes without saying). You might even get a en-/decryption plugin working, albeit a simplistic one. Then again, I'm no good at steganography or cryptography
Atice and Snax have some cool ideas. Sometimes considering the posts to Chat 100, the cries of NPCs across a sector are preferable. Channel encryption by player type would be grand too.. making intelligence gathering/communication for seperate player groups an immersive idea.
It certainly would add to RP, and like any channel can be switched off if you don't care for it. So being given their own channel is a better solution as Roda points out.
EDIT : Bah!.. missed a couple of the posts after.. I see the RP point of System chat notification now.. I think I will side that way instead.
A revision of the Station Marshall Chat method might be good.. offering some interaction for Pirate demands or Where are you? requests by Anti-Pirate players. As I learned Chat control, the interaction there was pretty straight forward for a new user too.
If I recall the format :
"Help us! We're under attack at [these co-ords] Anybody!"
(click to get a NAV route correction or to find out where not to go and maybe even get the heck out of dodge!)
"Hold your fire Pirate! What are your demands? [Ransom!][Refuse Parlay]"
(Pirate player either demands fees which the game rolls a decision on wether to pay up to predetermined amount; or Pirate chooses to cease Parlay and immediately the NPC starts a screamin')
Predetermined amounts could be 100k/250/500.. depends on the luck of the 'Roll' and wether the Pirates demand is less/equal to the highest the NPC will go. Imagine a string of luck successfully demanding 250K+ one evening?
Yah.. certainly a very immersive idea Snax. Vote +1
I disagree on adding yet another Plugin, this should be an ingame feature for all. Easily turned on or off as you please.
