3D maps

I've played a lot of space-based games, including some very early games, but I've found that just about all the space-age games I've seen still have 2D maps, this one included.

Though I expect it would be a LOT of hard work, it would be nice to have 3D maps that you can rotate, zoom in to and look around. You could select an individual block to travel to that sector, or an entire row/column to see a 2D map of that sector, much like the current 2D maps. This would open up a LOT more space without having to create new galaxies/sectors/whatever as well, which I think could well be a benefit.

If I want to see this implemented in any game, this would be that game. :)

3D maps are more difficult to use. I can hear the new players already. "How do I get there? How? I can't figure this out!"

And we have enough space as it is. We should strive to fill the one available before thinking about expanding it.

My opinion.

i agree with this very much however i think it would be far cooler to have a 3d sector map where the user selects ZY coordinates and then selects a YX coords, that would be really wicked specially if we get different sized systems between 4^3 and 8^3.

3d universe map can wait.

Come on guys. It's called "plane of the ecliptic" and it's been discussed to death. 3D sector maps are unrealistic because solar systems sit on flat 2D planes.

Also, we don't know the relative positions of the systems in VO, so the system map isn't 2D or 3D, it's just a representation of the wormhole paths. configuration. As far as we know they might not even be in the same galaxy.

Why are we stuck in the mindset that we need a sector map at all? Any good space game have contiguous solar systems where you can fly from any point to any other point using either your "combat" drives or your much faster "cruise" drives. The entire concept of discrete "sectors" is stupid. It's how VO works and I don't think it's worth fixing in the immediate future, but if we're going to touch the way sectors work at all we should just do away with them entirely.

Yes, especially the last paragraph. It would make running less easy, too.

Honestly i'm totally for the devs ripping the nav system out of EVE specially on the solar system scale because it's fucking amazing!

speed it up a bit though.

I second Spidey's sentiments there... EVE's in-system navigation is kick-ass, one of the few control elements they really got right.

Agreed, it IS interesting to operate EVE's Stellar Nav-System. In fact, zooming in and out of the nav system is more fun than actually "playing" (and I use that term loosely) EVE.

Let's have a 3D Nav system. I dunno what this will add, but the 3D system is more cool.

EVE has that and I like it. Sadly you don't even get to fly your ship in that game. it's all autopilot. What were they thinking. lol

But the 3d map idea is a good one. :)
