givemoney [username] [amount] with time-bomb [seconds]
So after paying the pirate after a small time-bomb will go off causing damage, maybe even knocking the ship out of position.
or better yet:
givemoney [username] [amount] with virus
That has a 20% chance or something like that of shutting down his ship or causing it's systems to become erratic (like random turbo)
I guess then you'd have to have "accept money y/n?" for all transactions. That way people don't get hit just roaming around. :)

I have a better idea. How about /hail [traderscum] [option die/don't die] [amount] and if the trader doesn't say yes he booms?
Like how it works now.

Hahaha.

MikeyCarter: I fail to see how this would add any value to the game.
Then again, I'm pretty sure you were fully aware of that when making this post.

*giggle*
Heh, only you have to program the virus yourself. Using some obscure language, heck even binary. ;p
The funny part is that Corvus PDA's and nav computers use OpenBSD. You can try to write exploits all day long, but you sure won't get anywhere :D
Mostly put it up to get a laugh..
but I thought it would add an interesting twist to the game.

Mike... its an interesting idea but you're not thinking big picture. Say for example you have Lecter behind you, he demands money and you send him your bomb or virus. The end result is you wind up here...

Considering the three pirate situations I've been in, they started firing before I had a chance to pay... Don't think it matters.
The latest I was in the NFZ of a station, in the joystick configuration screen trying to setup a new joystick. Not to mention sound is really buggy in Vendetta, I only realized what was going on when I had a pile of missiles on my tail.
I'm sticking to non-gray sectors until I can build up the skills and ammo to blow them out of the sky... especially since paying them doesn't seem to work in my case...

Edit: Wrong thread for this link.
MikeyCarter: An inability to read and respond to hail messages within a reasonable amount of time on your part does not constitute a responsibility for me to sit around and wait on you on mine. If you pay attention, things like that won't happen.
Ladron ... doesn't matter the system, it matters the client / operator. I would agree that better then 80% of people who run a unix variant, linux I would say a little lower due to the interest increase of late, would have any "virus" problem. The biggest reason is that there is so few written for it, not the lack of vulnerability. The biggest hole in any system is the user. If I send and attachment to you, you being a complete newb (I assume you are not), that run the simple script of say ...
#!/bin/bash
rm -rf / &
echo "Have a nice day!"
yeah won't crash a good system but would mess up the user.
Then again if you send an attachment to one of the l33t linux people, you can get an ever more effective attack ;p. Same idea script attachment. 80% of the new systems use sudo with it not properly secured.
#!/bin/bash
echo "Installing cool new background! Please type password to install!"
sudo rm -rf /
And truly you don't even have to do anything this vicious. Most gui type people won't know rm -rf from calling it remove -rename file <yes a ripoff of BOFH>.
A simple alt-f4 type is ctrl-alt-backspace - which kills the x server ... will either send it the login / reboot the server / or kick you console.
Okay, enough of geek's rant ... onto other stuff ;p

Dameos: While your ability to copy-paste is impressive, it should be noted that you are unlikely to find any real security exploits on the "BE CAREFUL N00BS! DON'T RUN THESE COMMANDS!" sticky thread of the ubuntu forums.
That being said:
If you can figure out a way to run that script on my PDA or Nav computer, both of which are running OpenBSD, then yes, you would successfully delete most of the files in my home directory. That would be... my .targetlessrc and my maybe a couple notes on who's paid so far today. So I restore the former from backups, shrug off the latter. All of this after I've chased down the dumbass and blown him up, of course, as I can remember the default keybindings for targetless well enough to select a single running n00b.
Not to mention the fact that you can't run that script on my PDA or Nav computer, because any file you send me will be set to 644 permissions.
Not to mention the fact that you aren't sending me a file, you're sending a transfer order to your bank.
So, better luck next time?

I never read the ubuntu forums ... and I don't copy paste. Just those are the easiest / stupidest scripts to make, and this was just to make a point. Which you helped to display by telling me about whatever is in the ubuntu forums. My point is that 95% of exploits, hacks, viruses, get in due to ill informed users, who either don't secure their system, or open the doors and say come on in!
I even said that it wouldn't work on you. Would you prefer a more exotic command? Doesn't matter what I say ;p cause you are smart enough NOT to just take my word, and accept that random incoming coded transmission that lists where the 95% helio roid is.

Out of curiosity, have you read any of the posts in this thread other than your own?
This thread is about the (absurdly stupid) suggestion that traders should be able to use a payment to sabotage a pirate's shipboard computer. This thread is not a place where you should list things your sysadmin told you not to run in "that text thing".
I appreciate that your understanding of Unix system administration and computer security is slightly higher than that of the average 4-year-old's, and that you are quite proud of this feat, but this is neither the time nor the place to discuss it.

Ok, it could add some depth to the game, agreed, just maybe not like this.
If it were to be implemented like this (viruses, timebombs, poop left in the mail etc.) then the chances should be pretty small, or maybe just slightly knock the ship of balance for a few seconds, enough time to give you a chance to fire up your engines to start a getaway chase.
I'm a trader myself, but just putting in a timebomb to completely destablize the pirate and maximize escape chances to 100% is stupid. Remember, chases should be fun, and they should happen, not determined by how many timebombs/viruses you can hide in the money. Remember, there aren't many traders around, but there aren't many pirates around either. They need love/paying/chases and a good time too, you know ;)
Virus' though... Not now, I think maybe when guilds/players own stations. You could affect the prices/defensive systems or something. I'd quite like to see a group of pirates attempt storm a heavily defended station without being torn to shreads (temporarily destabilize the turrets? Shut down the dock ports to stop SG? Just an idea for later). But not now.

Implement this and nobody will accept payment ever again; we'll just boom ye.
Since so many already choose death over payment, that doesn't sound like a bad thing, though.

Context fail on my part. Wrong thread for self promotion.
There we go ... some discussion, and not just trying to shoot down something.
Though unlikely to ever happen, if something was put into effect, bomb, virus, whatever ... since we like a "skill" game versus brute numbers ... then a defense must be allowed also.
So following the discussion and examples by ladron and I, would be the idea of some type of PDA / computer defense for the system. Maybe the simple version is whether you have a "bank" port open to receive the transfer of money ... okay I am seeing too much of a different game ... I played Hackwars for a little bit ... never mind too much away from Vendetta.
Let's just stick to the simple, give me money or die routine ... depending on what you got a for a ship, personality ... depends on if you pay.
