Flags
This comes from some newb complaining about being shot up while in his/her config screen. I'm certainly not advocating the type of flag system in place in other MMO's (pvp flags and the like). Instead it might be useful to have flags for the following:
1. Configuring game
2. Logging out
3. ...other stuff?
Point being, it would/might help certain people ascertain a target's actions/intentions, and therefore act accordingly.
Pirate-centric example: A pirate is demanding payment, the target comes to a full stop and then goes silent. Is he/she logging out, or fumbling nervously with his/her controls, trying to make a payment.
As I said, nothing here that actually affects the game mechanics. Just a way to prevent people's actions from being misread (for better or worse).
Edit: And by "flag", I mean simply a small icon above the player's ship.

Maybe something to indicate that a player is logging out would be sufficient.
I like this, and would add the following for "3."

I recently had some clown escape in an XC by either quitting VO or pulling his plug -- I was tapping his hull with shots to prevent a straight up log off -- and have since then just destroyed any target I think might be logging off/quitting out.

Yeah, basically anything that, while not being a game-play mechanic per se, often has negative effects on gameplay; either by mistake, or from misuse.
P-man, I agree that the "logging out" flag would be the most useful, but I would imagine that if the devs were going to implement that, then throwing a couple other flags in there wouldn't be a big task (maybe it would, I like to assume things I know nothing about).
From a visual perspective, I would imagine this would be a hud-relative visual indicator; ie. "above" the ship would mean above the ship in your hud.

I would not want anyone to know when I am in the config screen. you should do this in a station anyways. If it is a problem in B8, then just wait for a pirate to show up and sector chat "afk 5 min". that should work...
