The reward for 40 mentor points is Ultra Charge Batteries, and you can power level a trial alt to 4/4/4/4/4 in half a trial account. One mentor point per level means potentially 20 mentor points in 4 hours without ever actually helping a new player. I imagine a lot of people have done this already but obviously it takes longer and much more effort with the current limits. Perhaps limiting the number of mentor points that can be awarded per player would solve this issue.

Hang on a sec there, Imp. We never said anything about mentor points per level. IIRC you are currently limited to 2 mentor points per paid account, there is no reason to change that. We just want to be able to mentor people who are slightly higher levels but still hopeless newbs.

Let's re-iterate that you can mentor only subscribed, paying players, and you can mentor them at most twice (once per char, up to two chars... maybe it's three chars, but I haven't looked into that one in awhile, and given the current topic it is irrelevant).

If you feel like paying $10 for 2 or 3 mentor points... that's your business, and this fix doesn't further enable or disable players from doing such things.

Ok. So this doesn't sound super exploitable or anything. If there are real concerns, please let me know, otherwise I could probably get this bumped by Fri.

ok well then NM, I didn't know it was like that. I haven't used the mentor system for years, and when I did you didn't need to be subbed.

And while you are at it inc, please make the points from paid accounts only a retroactive thing. We still have a ton of players that got all their points from trial accounts before that exploit was fixed. I would be willing to bet there are more 40 point badges from the exploit than there are from honest mentoring.

Take all the trial points and put them in a trial badge, that get moved to actual mentor badge as the trials subscribe, so we can still mentor trial accounts, but only get credit when the trials actually subscribe.

I would argue that we should NOT require the mentored player to be subbed. The greatest asset of mentoring to VO as a whole, is that it will encourage new players to subscribe. After being mentored, an unsubscribed person will see both that VO is a community and that they have made some amount of progress (investment) in the game.

So what if a few people exploit it with their friends by having a "I mentor you, you mentor me" round robin or something. Just limit accounts to 1 mentor per (which admittedly wont prevent people from creating tons of false accounts, but will help slow things down). That detractor does not balance the value of increasing the size of the game-base and player interaction.

Rg10: unsubbed players can be mentored. They just can't rate (or their rating is not applied) until they sub.

I think increasing the levels limit on who can be mentored is a great idea. I signed up a couple of months ago and wandered around bumping into things and getting killed by bots and managed to get up 3's and 4's before I ever heard that there were guilds, found out about racetracks, queening, what Nation War, is etc.

Then I restarted as a new character and built my way back up again. Along the way I got tons of help from longtime gamers here, none of whom I could give any credit for all the time they spent bringing me along, because my licenses were too high. I'm still being mentored by several people who just seem to have kind of adopted me (perhaps because I'm kind of a fumbling old guy.

I have tried to pass this on to newer newbs. I think that the super cell should be a tad easier to obtain by helpful folks, and that there should be some way newbs can recognize the help the they get, mostly done in private, one on one. I get this kind of help, almost daily and it doesn't seem appropriate to waste chat time on yammering about it.

I don't see a way that someone who is helped in a meaningful way can express the degree of their appreciation. This is especially important to me as a relatively new player as I have certainly experienced the very few unhelpful folks in the game. These helpful folks are the life of VO and key to getting newbs to subscribe and keeping subscribers in the game.
