Crazy Idea I had.
The special ships are supposed to be really special right? Something that each nation puts a lot of effort on. Their pride and reputation is reflected in the amount of work they put into their special. So why are they so easy to come by? You just walk into your home sector and buy one just like you would any other ship. That isn't right.
So I was thinking, Special Ships, if we want to make them truly special, put a time limit before you get them. Instead of purchasing one at a station, you have to place an order for it. It will be delivered in a few hours/days/weeks/months, depending on how special we want to make them. Just a crazy idea I had. Thought I would share it.

Once we have shipyards, maybe.
I don't think that is entirely crazy, but I have a different 'crazy' idea regarding the special ships.
We all know that the game is slowly morphing into an RPG. We all assume that the ships are the pride of each major factions military and thus access to them is logically restricted to two groups: career military types and the most scurvy and wealthy of criminals (who have the necessary contacts and money to procure such hot property on the black market). My thought is that either of those career paths has enherent penalties with it that go along with the bonuses (like the access to super-crafts).
The situation is similar maybe to the situation with 1st edition Paladins. Strictly speaking your Paladin is superior in every way to your basic fighter. But he has all these RP considerations that make him a little more onerous to play and which force the player at times to be less than perfectly devious. So for example, if you take your character the career military route in order to get the 'easiest' access to the best ships and weapons, then you may find that while most players missions are voluntary, you are forced to accept dangerous and unprofitable military missions lest your character get busted down (in rank) and you lose accesss to the weapons you'd been struggling for. And if your character is the sort of interstellar crime lord that has the resources to procure military hardware through the blackmarket, great you don't have to do anyone's bidding, but on the other hand you probably have a death sentence in twelve systems (huge negative reputation) and as such your freedom is again limited.

Oooooo!! Major like!
you can also add a score limit to the special ships so newbies wont get a hold on them so easly....it's no fun if they dont know how to play in the other ships....
Im not going to go dig up the quote but one of the devs said(I think Ray?) That right now "special" ships dont really have a purpose *until* more RPG elements are added in.
^-----this is one of the reasons why I dont want specials "balanced" beyond beleif, becuase *eventually* they will be extremely hard to get.

score limit wouldnt help lunitary. if one was placed, those that merely dont like to bot would have a time getting them wouldnt they

These are good ideas, but keep in mind that right now things are so easily obtained because they need to be tested. The more people that have an item, the more it will be used and abused.
