Flare Balancing: larger close range dead zone.

Flares are heavy enough as is, there's no need to say that 1000kg is the mass of an empty tube of sunflares, for example, and that a full tube of 12 sunflares weighs in at, say, 1600kg. That's a massive nerf. A fully loaded tube of suns currently weighs 1000kg--it should drop as flares are expended, thus allowing people to choose to fly with fewer flares in exchange for a lower total mass.

It would be a massive nerf to use the current weight as the base weight of an empty launcher. But it would be a massive buff to use the current weight as the maximum weight.

No, how much of a buff it would be depends upon how heavy the ammo winds up being.

Fair enough, but that argument goes both ways. For example, a weight difference of 200kg either way would be equally buffy or nerfy.

hm, maybe it would be better to do an alternative approach to this whole discussion: rename flares to "swarm missiles" and add "flares" as they're used in real life - as homing missile counter-measures? meaning that the homing missiles will fly towards the swarm and detonate there instead of at the players ship, because the swarm projectiles have a much higher temperature.

could be be implemented for swarm countermeasures too, but only if the detonation radius is lowered.

i guess this shouldn't be that painful for current swarm users, because the one using flares still has "wasted" one small weapon slot (or even large weapon slot?).

maybe this could keep down that whole "swarms are unfair/imbalanced" discussion a bit, because this wouldn't imply a change to how the swarms react at all =)

I have never understood why widowmakers have grid 18 (wtf?!) while flares have grid 4.

Because one particular Dev has the strangest ideas about weapons balance I have ever, ever seen. The quest to prevent levels/hard work from ever translating into a combat advantage is sorta cute, but gets really fucking old the longer you stay around and the more bored you become.
