How bout a jetisonable cargo widget that repairs your ship when you pick it up?
Wait... how would you get it in your ship in the first place o.O
By damaging the ship of course, silly goose. Half the damage your ship takes is converted to repair widgets. That way when you go boom, your boomer can get a free repair.

We had this back in the spacequake era (no cheap shots, please) as health powerups. It might not be too hard to add. I'm not sure if we have a simple differentiation for "do action to ship on collision" vs "put in cargo hold on collision".. which might be a little problematic.
It would create very different dynamics, though, for letting people repair themselves. Part of the reason why the repair gun doesn't let you do that, is to emphasize group activities. Plus it would negate one of the uses of capships and stations and such. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I'm kind of tired at present.

Make them Samo-heavy. Then you would never carry them if you are out fighting, but an EMS who is not running about could carry a bunch. Group activity ensured. Sleep tight, dream of ponies:)
Lecter: A similar use-case, but quite different in implementation.. just from the "reloading" thing alone. The repair widget concept is potentially much simpler to do.
K, just noting for the record. Would ammo-reload cargo widgets also be simpler to do?
