I'm sick of fighting guys with pings so high they jump 50 meters at a time. They're impossible to hit, they land all their shots because I can't ever see where they're coming from, and frankly they're happy to keep lagging because they know it gives them an advantage.
Show player pings (A standard feature on all twitch PvP games) in the sector list so we can decide the guy from istanbul with the 400 ping is not worth fighting.

well.... with a low refresh rate. We should only need an average ping. not a real time updated ping. some games even just rate ping as good, fair, or poor. i don't see any reason to update the ping more than once a second, if even that.
And if that is still too much traffic (lots of players in sector) then make it so you can only see the ping of someone you target.
I would not mind an indication of ping, but I don't want it to add very much traffic or slow down the game.

Aye, don't want showing people's latency to increase their latency.
I concur with the assessment that ping definitely needs to be shown in some manner.
One way I'd recommend it is as Roda said, to have a targeted ship spit out a ping number, that could then update every 1-5 seconds.
Another way would be to only get a ping result when you targeted another pilot, then opened the pilot detail screen.
I also think it wouldn't be bad idea if there was information on the pilot detail screen that showed the players average ping over the last...say, 30 days?

Fair enough, ping does make a considerable difference in vo pvp. I would suggest including the +/- tolerance since I feel this has as much of an influence on the perceived movement of a player as the absolute ping value. I have seen players with a low ping but very variable tolerance bouncing about far more than those with a higher ping but lower tolerance.
Either way player feedback would be useful.

or we need to come up witha better way to sync up players..... Perhaps force them to the same ping time? The hard part is how to decide which players need to be synced...
Dunno. Its a tough problem

Just don't register any shots fired by a player with a ping > 100ms. Making the game "playable" for someone on a dial-up connection from the ISS is not worth while if it makes the game unplayable for the rest of us.
Notice that it would still be entirely possible for someone with high ping to trade or mine. They just can't shoot at me while jumping halfway across the sector when I try to shoot back. This seems pretty fair to me.

Ladron, that would make VO effectively a US only game. Most of the European players I have spoken to in game ping at about 120 -180 ms and manage pvp with no appreciable lag even when fighting another player with a similar ping.
Nice but not enough restrictions.
I propose that GS banish everyone that is not a resident of Milwaukee and also ban any user whose internet connection is going thru Cogent Co even if they are residents of Milwaukee.

I live in Australia, and have a ping of around 215-230 usually.
The game is very smooth, and the only lag i've experienced was with Nation War. All my hits register normally, and hits on me also.

Then up the number; I just picked one. At what point does ping start becoming an issue? 200? 250? Whatever it is, make that the cutoff.
Wait if you cant pvp with high ping then all you need to do to be totally safe is to use a wireless connection.... exploit city here we come

@Pak
I believe he said that shots FIRED from a person would not register, but shots recieved would still work.
Anyway, I think that limiting stuff like that is stupid.
But an in-sector ping visibility thing WOULD be very handy.

I don't think any ping limited stuff is necessary. Simply giving some kind of option to see your opponents ping is all that's needed.
Aye. Make the information available, let the player decide.
The problem is that the player does not always have the option to decide. What happens when some jackass who decided to run bittorrent in the background to make himself impossible to hit attacks you? It isn't really a big deal as far as I'm concerned, but that would certainly eliminate the annoyance of people with horrible pings.
Having the number available would sort that out. Guys like that who are purposely hosing their connections would get that reputation. Right now we've no way to call anyone out on this particular punkass move. It's odd because most of us start to skip around and think "oh did I forget to turn something off?" while a select few know they have crap connections and are happy for it. At least one guy I know does it on purpose, but only when he's losing. I can't exactly blame the first bunch, they can't help having a shit connection, but if they take pride in it and the advantage it gives them we need to have some recourse in terms of calling them out and have evidence to back it up. So next time I face serygyn or tierl and tell them "I'm not fighting you because you're unhittable bouncing around the screen like that" I have a number in front of me that backs me up.
Okay, fair enough.
I think, at a minimum, we could auto-kick anyone who goes >500 ping.
